We have our place up north and they used to sell kerosene right from the pump (gas station). Now for some unknown reason they dont ( all of 2 gas stations). But they have a couple of airfeilds somewhat close by. One of the old timers by me suggested jet fuel, he said the two are almost alike in many ways and hes been using it because it a shorter drive to get it. Does anyone have any input on this? I would be using it for our kerosene heaters. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

grumpa:

there are SEVERAL types of Jet Fuel:

JP4 ~JP8 differances are how fast they ignite similer to Octane rating of gas: BUT i'm not 100% sure they WILL substitute for K1 but yes they are similar... the JP8 I belive is closer to home heating oil than diesel. and the JP4 is closer to K1...

When I worked at the airport refueling airplanes, we ran jet fuel in our boiler that was designed for kerosene. Unfortunately, the rate we charged for jet fuel was 2X the going price for home heating oil to the penny. Don't know what it is around your area, but i think you could find a cheaper alternative than jet fuel.

Grumpa, I believe many jet fuels have biocides and anti-icing additives. These would probably not be good for kerosene heaters which vent directly to the area they heat. If the firebox is isolated from the heated air, I think these fuels would be fine. They are rather expensive as Moss Road pointed out. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Typically its sold for just under $2gal, where as kerosene out of the pump went for just over $2gal. If you go to the hardware store to buy it (5gal pail), it goes for just under $3gal.

You might want to read throught his site before you make up your mind. The handbook is good and there is more info. on their main site.airbp

Especially in winter, they add the anti-icing agents at the refinery. Some didn't come with it and we had to mix in a product like Prist. We also had to add a microbicidal fungicide to keep organisms from growing in the fuel tanks. Can't remember the name of it. I thought the Prist use to have that in it, but don't see it in their literature anywhere. It's been a looong time since I handled fuel... about 18 years, so I may be forgetting something. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

That surprises me. I know 18 years ago we bought jet fuel for the same price as home heating oil and then doubled it. We charged almost $2.00 a gallon back then. Prices haven't changed that much, then, but it appears the profit margin has come down.

Should be OK. It also works in a diesel engine, but you need a lubricity additive. I just ran a tank in my car and added some 2-stroke oil. Took a little hit on performance and economy, but it would have been wasted otherwise.

Price depends on the source. I've stopped at Fixed Base Operators that didn't have military contract fuel and saw upwards of $3.50 per gallon. Contract was always less than $2.00 per gallon. Might want to work out a deal with the seller. There's some room for profit margin there.

Jet A and JetA-1 are essentially kerosene. and could be used. I do not think the additives would be a problem as you have to vent a heater any way to keep from burning all of the oxygen out of the room. Those are probably the only jet fuel you will find at small airports. Positively do not use Jet B or JP4. I doubt you could buy any but these are a mixture of gasoline and kerosene and highly explosive. Look here for a simple explanation of jet fuel.
