Tractor
John Deere 855
I have been offered this tractor for free as long as I pick it up. 100 miles away. The person offering it to me does not know what is wrong with it. His job is to go in a clean out houses, so he has no clue about this. Do you guys have any idea what kind of tractor this is? Any input would be helpful. You guys think it is worth it?

Thanks

Greg

IHC Farmall 300. Late 1950's, only made them a few years.

Does it have the Quickhitch? (2-point deal like a 3pt hitch, but different....)

Replacement for the H tractor, few more hp, more hydraulics, TA offeres the hi/lo speeds for a 10 speed - but I'll wager it is shot if you are getting it for free.

The serial plate will be in picture #3, shiny plate just above the loader hyd cylinder, on the tractor frame. You can get the exact year from that.

Dad pretty much ran the farm with it for a number of years, ours is a wide front. You have the belt pulley instead. :)

I see whats wrong, the tires are flat.

The only serious thing I would say is its not free if you have to pay to get rid of it. Good luck, hope it works out,

If you have the time and a place to play with it then you should definitely go get it. It will be interesting to check out and with the price of scrap metal these days you can surely pay for your fuel if it is not feasible to repair.

I did some checking online and it looks like this thing is 100 inches wide!! I'll never fit that on my tandem axle trailer. Now what to do?

Is it really 100" wide 8'-4" or could it be that the rear wheel can be widened that far?

If you look at the pics, it appears that the rear wheels are adjustable or there's space on the axels for another set of wheels.

Can you ask the guy to measure outside to outside on the rear wheels? How wide is your trailer?

The rear wheels slide on the axle. As well there are 2 bands on the rim, can be narrow or wide rim setting. As well the rims can be switched from one side to the other, to make the dish in instead of out. So there is a lot of adjustment you can make. Mind you the loader frame is in the way so you may need to haul the loader seperate, & wheel bolts can be _very_ rusted tight so I'm not saying it is easy. But, don't think you are stuck with 100 inch width, that tractor fits in my shed with an 8 foot wide door easily and only one wheel is moved in close, other is out. Think you could get under 7 feet easy, less if you really tried.

Note you don't want to dual up this tractor. Axles are for adjusting wheel width for stability or matching row spacing. The factory did a poor job on selecting & tempering steel on these, the original rear axles like to crystalize & break off. Dad had both crack & drop the tractor tot he ground (not both at the same time). Neighbor had a mounted picker on one, driving down the road in high gear an axle snapped, he had a heck of a ride, musta needed to change shorts on that one. Anyhow, not to scare you away from it, good tractor. But the axles were known to have flaws. Duals would only make them appear faster!

Go on over to Red Power Magazine and they will be glad to help, or even take it off your hands. It is worth at least a grand just for parts, so I'd be all over that thing. Other than missing hoods, it looks pretty good, and at least someone covered the muffler, so it would indicate that it probably ran when parked.

I'll take it. Where do I need to pick it up?

I'm surprised to see extended axles on an older lower hp tractor. I see alot of usable parts depending on how it runs. Old tractor parts seem to be a gold mine lately. Good luck !
