OK, my local Deere dealer struggles all the time with parts. I assume they just don't sell parts for real tractors, so I get part numbers on line usually before I go in looking.

Two weeks ago I was in Muncie Indiana and drove past Reynolds Equipment. Compared to Maryland, these boys have real tractors and real combines!

I stopped in, and decided to try to get the oil filter "O" ring I needed for my '48 B. The kid says just a second. This other guy comes out, asks what I need, I tell him I need the "O" ring for the oil filter for a '48 B. He tells the kid it is part A519R and pulls one right out. No books, no computers, just off his head. And trust me, this part of Indiana does not have too many '48 B's working the fields any more!

Kudos to a truly amazing parts guy, I wish I knew his name. Fun dealer to check out if you ever get to that part of Indiana!

Yep, the old guys had more than mush between their ears! That's for sure. And I'm not just saying that because of my gray hair either:laughing:.

As a kid I used to go get auto parts at the local store. The old crotchety guy chain smoking behind the counter knew every part number, what was in stock and what the price was. Never looked anything up and I never had to take anything back.

Without any doubt, guys like that are fewer and further between. But the other side of that coin is this. That square cut o-ring is used everywhere that cartridge oil filter is used, from A's and B's right up to a 1972 Deere 4020. And Deere has seen fit not to change the part number over those years. Were that a CNH part, the number would have changed 7 times, 3 in the last 2 years, and nobody would know off the top of their head what the number was because it would contain 9 digits. But the point remains valid, an experienced parts "man" is invaluable, even when she is a woman.

When I was working in Kubota dealers I had many part numbers memorized. But Kubota had a numbering system that made sense too, and it was pre-computer days. Like 08101-0xxxx were ball bearing numbers insert your standard bearing number in place of the xxxx, or 01173-5xxxx were bolt numbers with captured lockwashers insert your diameter and length in place of the xxxx. All of the common parts were similar, snap-rings, o-rings, nuts, washers, etc., they all had a prefix and then the remaining digits were dimensions. Of course over time, not using them everyday I have lost most of the numbers I had memorized.

We got the local parts gal who can't remember what you asked for with the list you gave her still in her hand! More than once I've had to say to the guy in line behind me, "You go ahead, I'm waiting on the older gentleman."

Perhaps the next generation tractor owners that trade in that shop will say to the guy in line behind them, "you go ahead, I'm waiting on the older gal." Experience is the key to parts knowledge. You are the tutor and she is the student that will become that future knowledgeable parts person.

What a crock. She is getting paid to know her job. Way to transfer her responsibilities off her shoulders. Not to mention shes been there at least ten years already (as long as I've been here) and is at least ten years older than I am too.

What a crock? Now you say she's been there for ten years and like your first post, not very detail oriented. I would have not posted the way I did if you would have included that she has been working the parts counter for ten years and still doesn't get it. Your complete subject matter is very important when criticizing people.
