I am just back home from a dealer shop who has also a small manufacturing shop in this small town. (what the hell I am doin here!! I should have been at the seaside sunny towns now.!! Anyway.)

I've been thinking to buy a rock rake for some days and visited the dealer shop today. He has 2 sizes of rock pickers; one is small, of a size of about 7-8 feet (I guess) and the bigger is about 13 feet. They look like the one seen in attacment.. I was attracted by the beauty, the compactness (and of course the price) of smaller rock rake. But the dealer said "you can save your time by the bigger one!" and that advice made me go crazy. How can the time be saved!! It's flowing through a life pipe without a valve or without a stopper. And, with that thoughts in my mind, I returned home by postphoning my decision to tomorrow. And, first thing to do when I am back home was to ask your opinions. Here we go.. Can the time be saved by larger tools/implements?

Ps: You can apply your thoughts to a mower or a tiller or to your any other item and enlighten us please how you are saving your time.

Ps2: I also have another opinon on the bigger tools and it is that for the body health, the larger tools are not good for the health. However, this is another story we can discuss in another thread.

Nomad, I suspect the answer to your question is obvious to most of us but you are clearly on a different tack here. Rather than us answer you why not enlighten us as to what you call it when a given task can be accomplished in less time /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Nomad,

I've got to tell you that you crack me up. Are you related to Henro?? Both of you guys ask the most interesting, and sometimes frustrating, questions that get posted here. But you sure do get people thinking! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

O.K. Here goes.

No, time cannot be saved, based on the way you presented the question. Time cannot be grabbed and put into a box to be later dragged out and used. Wouldn't it be nice if it could be though? /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

But as Rob alluded to, a person can make more effecient use of their time. You can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete a task by using a better (i.e. larger, faster, sharper, etc.) tool or by employing a different technique to do the task.

But because of the way you constructed your question, there really is no way of answering it logically. It's all semantics. It's like the question, When did you quit beating your wife? No matter how you answer the question, you're in trouble.

O.K. I'm done. Have fun! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

nomad,
When I first saw your post, the philosophical thoughts started running through mind. When I opened the thread and started reading I saw you were on that track too.

As to the philosophy, you can use the time that you have well or use it poorly, you can't save or keep it for later. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif You can, however, optimize it to spend as little time as possible doing the tasks that you don't enjoy so you have more to do the things that you like. Only you can be the judge of what you do or don't enjoy. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The US gummit does it every year with Daylight Savings Time /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I know it is not scientifically correct, but when has science ever gotten in the way of politics.

Well nomad first off seeing as you totally missed what the guy was trying to tell you.....Let's put it this way: You'd get the job done in almost half the time if you took the larger rock rake. Now this would leave you lots more time to ride around on your flying rug!! Make sure though and wear your brain bucket this time,eh......By the way just what did you plan on pulling these rock rakes with anyways, and on who's land???

Thanks all for your attempts to help this nomad. I thought especially folks like on such a forum could understand me. There is no semantics in my post/s.

Let me try again with my relatively poor language. Okay, we are spending the time this way or that way. No, we can not spend it. It's being spent together with us;).

Anyway - returning the topic. Larger, sharper, faster, etc implements can do the work in a shorter time, right? We including I agree in that. BUT we are in a different position. We are a kind of hobby farmers and that means we "like & enjoy" passing some pleasure time when we are playing with our these toys, doesn't it? Then, why shall we shorten the time, say, to pick the rocks? That doesn't fit us. Then, why larger implement? Or, do not we like farming and therefore, are we trying to shorten the time of mowing, tilling, hog-ing, raking, etc? This is nonsense for us because these works aren't the things we hate - therefore, why saving the time! Lets use smaller implements that will NOT save our time.

Ps: Anyway, the time can't be saved and if anyone can feel it can be saved, then he/she is a person who doesn't like farming.

I was always told that time is RELATIVE: if you are on you're Kubota JD or NH whatever and traveling at the speed of light, then time SHOULD in theroy stand still and hence you are SAVING time! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif so if you can not pull that BIGGER rock rake at the speed of light then no you won;t SAVE time, as it still will slip past you! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well, for me, I work a full-time job during the week, and the weekends are pretty much the only time I get to work on my property -- as well as all the normal chores around the house. So when I can find tools, attachments that can help me do things faster, allow me to get more of my never-ending list complete. Now, if someone would drop a couple million dollars in my lap, I could quit my job and enjoy doing what I like no matter how long it takes.
