Can I use 5/16 grade 70?

I have a Kioti Ck 2510, all in, weighs about 4,000lbs. Trailer is fine. Want to know if I can use 5/16th, grade 70 transport chain to secure it to my trailer ( and I have similarly rated binders and hooks) instead if 3/8ths chain.

Reason is, I have an abundance of the 5/16th in stellar condition. I ask as all I see is videos and conversation about 3/8ths.

Yes, you can use 5/16" grade 70 chain. I secure my heavier LS using 5/16". I use 2 front, 2 rear and one over the loader. 3 pt. implements usually get ratchet straps. I also have 3/8" chain but much lighter using 5/16".

Sure you can. There are two types of attachments - direct and indirect. Just make sure you meet the aggregate WLL tie down.

Direct is where it goes straight from the trailer to the machine. Indirect is where it goes from the trailer, over the item, and to the trailer on the other side. Indirect tie downs count as 1/2 th WLL of the chain and direct counts as the full WLL. The WLL or 1/2 WLL if direct of all the chains together must add up to at least half the weight of the item being secured.

For a tractor indirect tie downs seem to work better. One on each corner. Using 5/16" G70 you have a WLL of 4,700lbs. Cut in half is 2,350lbs. Put four of them on it you are at 9,400lbs more than four times what is required. Even if you just used two you would be fine.

I mostly carry 3/8" chain as I tie down several things in the 20k range but I have used 5/16" to tie down 10k machines. I use 1/4" chain to tie down two kubota RTV's that weigh 2k each all the time.
