I was in the same boat. I had very little luck. Well, none.
So I spent 18k and got a new one. Here is why. First, I could not find anything in the 10-12k range with an FEL, much less 4wd and an FEL. I'm not saying they aren't out there, but I couldn't find a name brand at that price.
Second, I did not have the cash to buy anything decent without a loan. So if I got a used tractor I was going to have to get some money somewhere, which probably meant a home equity loan at decent but potentially escalating rates. Well, along comes Kubota's 0% 3 year loan. That opened the door a little.
Third, I found a
L4400 4x4 with FEL at a local dealer for right at $18,000. So, with a fairly good sized down payment and the rest on the 0% loan for 3 years I was able to get monthly payments to a reasonable level. I hate being in debt but I figured a good name brand tractor would hold its value very well in case I had to bale out.
So that's why I spent way more than my budget. And the
L4400 has actually exceeded my expectations, plus, being new it has a warranty so for the life of the 0% loan, the drive train should cost me nothing.
And the 4400 sounds just right, 45 hp, 4x4, FEL. But, it isn't fancy. Gear drive only. But I love mine. So, yes, its a wopping 6k more than you want to spend, but if you are going to have to get a loan to get the 12k tractor, you can at least subtract the interest on the 12k.
