What is the name of the plants we have found on our property that can grow anywhere from 5' to over 8' tall with a stalk that sometimes is about 1 1/2" in dia. but the THORNS. They get almost 3" long and are about 1/4" thick where they attach to the stalk and are needle sharp. In fact one went thru my sole but only slightly picked my foot.
I have used a machete and a sling blade to cut them but without rooting them they grow back if the property isn't cut often.
Do I have to plow them up to get rid of them and I really don't want to put the tires on them while the plant is healthy and standing?
Got some suggestions?

Without any pictures, it would actually be very difficult to offer a definitive answer. It sounds like one of the Hawthorne tree species. I live in the Piedmont area of North Carolina, and your description sounds most like a representative of this species. Just my thoughts. Do you have a way to post pictures?

I know what your talking about but don't know the name of it. It will give you a flat tire, also. You can spot spray roundup in the spring and see what happens. If it comes back (new shoots), you can spray RU during the late fall when plants flow sap into the roots, which will give a better/longer lasting kill rate on hard to kill plants.

I've been bushhogging one field for years and it comes back. I need to get spraying also.

If the Thorns grow all up and down the stalk but not on the green shoots. It sounds like Devil's Walking Stick. I have this on my land. It uproots easy.
I have never seen my thorns that long though. maybe 1/2 inch. maybe it is in the same family.

I am visiting Grandkids in TN till after Christmas so I can't post a photo, but I can tell you for sure that the thorns are long and sharp.
I remember cutting a small group of them while my son held down the tops with the FEL and when I cut the bottoms, they snapped up and nearly got me good in the arms and chest. After that, I cut one at a time and carefully pulled it out and watched where I walked after that.
Does Hawthorne have a greenish color bark? If so it could be that species. The bark is easy to peal away once you can handle the branch.
I would not want to be a dog running a rabbit and find myself in a thicket of these.

Could they be juvenile Locust trees?
