Can anyone help me troubleshoot my bulk grease pump?

Just got my Pail of C&C Moly 880 and a Lincoln Guardian bucket pump. The pump seems pretty well made but was inexpensive. It did not come with any instructions and none are available from the mfgr - so I think I might have done something wrong. Can't get it to work.

I opened up the pail, inserted the follower plate on top of the grease. Pushed the pump shaft through the follower plate into thte bucket. Secured the pump to the bucket with the thumbscrews. Pump...and pump...and pump...and...nothing. Pumped the handle about 100 times...nothing.

Do you have to prime the pump in any way? Is there some trick that I am missing here or is this thing just busted?

Nevermind, got it to work. Just for reference in case anyone else has the same problem. There are four holes at the bottom of the pump shaft and there was a little metal plate just inside that pivots. Mine must have been stuck - I pushed in a screwdriver and rotated it a few times and then the pump worked.
