Sorry, didn't know how to phrase this question any better.

I'm working on a snow plow lift,
I have a JD4310 and am using the loader valve's bucket curl circuit for angling which works fine and already bought a DA cylinder for the lift but started thinking.......

Was wondering if a single acting cylinder could be used instead of the DA? where you would push the piston up with the down motion of the loader valve then push the stick further into float to let the piston retract with the weight of the plow???

With the loader's da cylinders in float, fluid must flow back and fourth thru both sides of the cyl and valve? I'm not sure if the fluid would flow back with just the one line. I'm guessing maybe not but thought it was worth asking.

2nd prong,
Bought the 2"x8" cylinder at TSC for $95. it says working load of 2500 psi, is that compatible with our machines?
Any other comments on this cyl.

I like the clevis design with quick pins, thought it might be a good fit for other DIY projects like maybe a grapple or power angle rear blade.

Hope to come up with something like the kubota pic which looks like the same cylinder. I saved the picture from a project post by "Asgar" 12/07.

JB.

The short answer is YES, if the FEL is in float-then both ports are open to the tank and the SA cylinder would "float"

But, you will want to use the DA cylinder on your plow, downpressure is very nice to have.

That cylinder will work just fine.

Thanks, Yeah I saw the picture of yours with the front tires off the ground, could srape some hard packed snow with that I bet.

This plow is fairly heavy and am just gonna go with the chain for now but I guess a rigid link would not be that diffecult to come up with.

Off to the Hyd shop to get violated, I mean get some hoses.
We have a few different industrial shops around here so can always find what I need, just a little pricey.

I agree.. 2500 psi is a pretty standard level for ag hyd implements.

well I put it together, and it came out better than I expected.

I put rigid/ non swivel 90's on the cylinder and the couplers (for tire clearance) the 2x8 cylinder seems to be the perfect fit for this application., I did cut all the extra (aprx. 1.25") threaded rod off to make it more compact. and I got pretty lucky with the geometry of the layout.

With the cylinder all the way out the plow blade is 16 inches off the ground and when retracted there's still enough slack in the chain to allow the plow to drop way down in the hole caused by a steep driveway apron.

I'm gonna start another thread on the simple construction of this set up in the "build it yourself" forum. This project morphed from my loader lifted plow thought, once I got that plow fixed to the tractors frame I thought it would be nice to have it stand alone without the loader on, makes it a little sportier to not have the loader arms hanging there.

Thanks, JB.

Another great job! :)

I just replied to your thread on the 50" bucket.- You do great work!

It looks like it should work out just fine.- If you don't care, I may use this design.

When you start the other thread on this.- Can you post a picture of the mount on your tractor?- I assume you made it also.

Thanks for posting your projects!

Looks really nice. A question. What keeps the plow mount (the slotted part) secure on the tractor? If down pressure is applied what would keep the plow mount from moving up?

Good point that I didn't think about, but since I'm using this only as a chain mount for now it's not an issue.

I did put 2 x 1/2" holes thru the plates that line up with existing holes in the weight bracket in case the assembly was sloppy, but it appears to be very stable just slid on there, if I were to go with a solid link for down pressure, I'd have to bolt it. Thanks.

So the next question is, Can a DA cylinder be used as a SA cylinder if you plug the top port and only use the bottom port to extend the cylinder? Would the cylinder retract with just weight on it when hyd pressure was released from the bottom of the rod?

Yes, but you need a vented plug-not a solid one. I think you should just run it as the DA-the cost is only one hose and if you ever want to use downpressure you will be all set.

Kenny,

Thanks, I've got it all plumbed with both lines for DA use, (see pics in post 5) it was just easier for me like that. 2 x 3/8" x 60" lines, 4 solid 90's and 2 stainless nips, all pipe thread for ~$100. the stainless plugs added 30 bucks to the overall price but that was all they had.

Just trying to educate myself, As complicated as all the fitting options is, seems the bigger problem is specking the cylinder, went through that when trying to put a HTL together.
I thought you just walk in and buy one off the shelf from a wide selection.
Was glade to find this multi use cylinder at TS for the plow lift.

So all SA cylinder have some kind of one way vent built in to allow air in?

You would like this hyd shop near me, they work on stuff up to 10,000 psi. just 1 cut of that hose and it fills the room with smoke so bad they have to open the doors and windows. all kinds of 2" thick catalogs for free with all the hyd goodies.
