Hello,

I got a little to close to some tree branches and now I have a leak in one of my hydraulic hoses on my back hoe. It seems more like a tiny hole as opposed to a big tear. When I move the actual bucket is sprays out not shoots/squirts out. Can it be patched or do I need a whole new hose? It is close to the fitting.

Thanks
Jim

If the rest of the hose is in good shape and you have plenty of extra length, the old end cut be cut off and a new one installed.

You might be able to cut the hose after the hole and crimp a new end on, but it can't be patched.

Don't get hit with that stream of oil. It can bust thru your skin and give you more health issues than you want to know about.

I say no- get a new one they're cheap. Surplus center. That hose looks old to me anyway.

+1 on that...

Me? NAPA... Take the old hose off, take it in. Walk out the door better than new $60 later.

At least that's how the situation plays out here...

Do not mess around with high pressure hydraulic hoses. Get a replacement hose. If you do not want to mess around with adapting a 3/8" NPT hose to what looks like JIC ends, bring your old hose to a hydraulics jobber. Expect to pay $40-55.00 for a new hose from the jobber.

Better off to replace than cause bigger problem.
I wrap 3M rubber electric tape spots going to get hit for added protection.

If it can afford to lose a few inches take it to a hose shop and get them to fit a new end. It won't cost much. BUT buy an identical spare hose at the same time. That's what I always do, and the spare hose always comes in handy eventually.

As said, if you have enough slack in the hose to loose about 3 inches, a new end can go on it, BUT those crimp on ends are not cheap. They will charge you at least $15 for that and it is less than $1 per foot for new hydraulic hose. I busted about every hose on my Yanmar FEL before I sold it. It came with 2500 PSI rated hoses and none of the replacement cost more than 50 bucks. I think it was all 4000 PSI rating but I am not sure of that figure, just that it was much higher than the original.

When removing that hose, tie on a pull rope or wire to the old hose so you can pull the new one back in with it.

Thanks for the advice. Tractor is less than a year old. I just was a little careless around the trees.
There is not enough slack to cut and refit. I'll have to get a new hose once I figure out how to get it out.
I live out in the sticks. Other than Napa, any other big name places to get new hose?

Thanks
Jim

Car Quest makes hoses but very pricey. They were twice the cost of OEM hoses from the Kubota dealer.

You can mail order custom hoses from TBN sponsor discounthydraulichose.com -- they have done a good job for me several times. Just need to give them the length, diameter, hose type, and types of ends you want crimped on.

Our Oreillys make hoses, you may just want to call around before you go searching if you have to travel far. Equipment rental places may also sell hoses.

Go to someone who can do the complete hose for you- easier. (Parker in Bangor - in my area) I bought one at tractor supply and spent the next week tracking down fittings to make the connections. I used teflon tape for reassembly, no leaks. Before that I had tried some paste out of a tube, leaked like crazy. Good luck.

depending on the length and the fitting, TSC might have one. They have a good supply.

Really not supposed to use Teflon tape on these fittings. I know- I know, a lot of guys do it, but it can cause some grief if it gets into the system. Also, TSC is as worthless as Walmart when it comes to identifying and adapting hp hyd fittings. Try Surplus Center (web site) next time.

Hose I have found cheaper at the previously mentioned Hydraulichoses.com, but the tech page at Surplus Center will save a lot of frustration and needless adapter buying.

I just went to the Mahindra dealer and had them make me up replacement hoses. I buy 2 each time I need one so that I am not again broken down and leaking oil where it is least convenient. Surprisingly, the Mahindra dealer made up the hoses (approx. 30 inch long) for about $30 each. That is far less than others here are reporting. And it was 4k hose.

I'm curious which of your tractors you went to Mahindra for a line for? (I don't see a Mahindra listed) Were they just the closest place that makes hoses as needed?

Did it have a brand printed on the hose? I'm also curious if they use the same stuff at all dealers or if it is a per-dealer item and they stock their own stuff...
