A large contingent of our Boy Scout troop will be doing a week long resident camp near Tillamook Oregon, at Camp Meriwether . From here in Shingle Springs, it add up to more than a 10 hour drive for 5 carloads of Scouts and adult leaders. BSA allows for a ten hour drive per day(same as commercail driver?). By mapquest ect, they show 10-12 hours driving.

So, we need to split our trip up. One, we are too close to the 10 hour limit at best case. Two, no one so far wants to drive a carload of kids a full ten hours in a day /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif We are thinking of splitting the trip somwhere around the Ca/Or border or Medford area.

Does anyone know of a reasonable campground in that area that would be a good stop-over? It also has to have food nearby. We are thinking that we want to keep a very quick simple camp, so we may send an adult out to get pizza in town or something. We love to cook in our troop, but don't want the hassle of getting 20-25 people cooking ect on a trip.

I have googled and found a few spots, but wondered if the core knowledge of this group might have some ideas /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't know anything to help with your question, Robert, but if you're near Tillamook and have never been to see the Tillamook Cheese Factory it's well worth the time, and I'll bet a bunch of Boy Scouts would find it very interesting. But when we visited it, we were staying farther north at a campground in Canon Beach.

Coos Bay is a nice place to stop. Click Here It's about 4 hours from Tillamook. Many places to stop including State parks and KOA camp. Try this for info on Pacific 101 highway. Click Here
If you are traveling 101 in the summer, do not expect good time. The road can be a traffic jam when all the tourist are out. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
After making this post, it came my mind that you may not be taking 101. You will be taking the I-5 freeway. It still may be a good place to stop.

Between I-5 and 101 is the Mendocino, Trinity, Shasta and Klammath National Forests. They cover millions of acres of public land that is about as cheap a camping experience as you can get.

I've hunted parts of them and there's campgrounds all over the place. They will probably need a reservation. They have bathrooms and designated camp sites and I think they charge a few buck per night.

There are all sorts of hunting camps along the logging roads and they don't cost anything for the night. Just set your tents and start a fire.

The Rangers have check-in buildings on most of the access roads off I-5 to the Forrest and will issue you a burn permit. They also know of all the best places to camp.

It might be worth your time to give them a call and talk to a ranger.

I did a quick google search and found http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/forests.html with some information on it that might help.

...Mendocino, Trinity, Shasta and Klammath National Forests.

That is some absolutely beautiful country Eddie. I went through Shasta in the early spring many years ago and thought it was just a wonderland with a little snow still left in the shadows.

Not much for pizza joints but a couple cases of MRE's would probably make a great meal for a scouts. The new ones beat the heck out of the C-Rats I first endured .
