Calling on John Miller III & others

I'm helping out an old friend 83 yrs old that still runs several hundred acres of orchard. He has a 1957 (same year I was born) Ford 850 series tractor with a very cracked head on this gas engine. (He still runs older ones then this daily) Any clues where I can check on getting a used one? I figured if JM III doesn't know, it doesn't exist. Apparently, around here, (Sacratomato), the tomato harvesters (of which there must be hundreds) used the same engine and have pretty much depleated any sources for one. Any leads would be a great help to this great ol gentleman. Thanks, Rat...

May be a last resort, but wouldn't hurt to try as a first.....
If the crack is anywhere except around a valve seat or sprakplug hole, try getting it welded. I've seen many cast iron items welded, from axle housings to exhaust manifolds. Preheat before mig'ing them seems to be the usual recommendation.

Welding is not a bad idea but you have to find a shop that has experience welding cast. If I remember correctly they start out pre-heating the part, maybe in an oven. Antique tractor restorers do a lot of head and block welding. There may be shops that specialize in old tractor engine welding.

Bob, he told me it has many cracks, brought it in to get it repaired and was told they might be able to repair with no gurantees because of the cracks locations. Thanks, Rat...

I called him last night and he is going to call the numbers today of the places shown here today. I asked if he used the internet and mentioned that this is one area where the internet is so valuable. He said "no its to complex but I do get email, about 20 messages a day varying from Viagra to Sexy teens, it takes me a few minutes to delete them all every night, I don't care for it."
