BX24 won't start at idle?

In the past I used to start my BX24 with the throttle at idle, never had a problem. Now I have to move the throttle about one inch to get it started....

Can't figure out what's going on...

Any suggestions?

- BX24
- New Battery
- Checked voltage at glow plugs , ok
- Changed both fuel filters
- Always starts at the first try when throttle is open.
- Once started, move the throttle back to idle and runs just fine.

Are you using a winter blend Diesel at the moment ? I find it a little harder to fire up than normal Diesel .

I've always started my BX23 with the throttle slightly engaged...Going to try it without being moved and left at idle.

I don't really know.... I guess I'll ask the local gas station if the diesel fuel is winter grade...

I'm new to diesels, but wouldn't the condition of the glow plug and the length of time it is activated have anything to do with starting? Fuel pressure and compression are variables as well. Maybe you are not letting the glow plug warm up enough in the colder weather?

If starting is seasonally cyclic I suppose it would point to the fuel or starting procedure but if it gets worse over time, I would think I would look at glow plugs, fuel pressure and compression in that order.

BTW the manual states to start the engine at medium throttle.

Then the OPs is within Specs.
In which case i would not be to concerned about it.

My BX starts really hard at idle, but much better if I bump up the throttle maybe 1/3. I also warm mine up at about 1500 rpms instead of at idle.

It seems like the owners manual says something about starting it partially off low speed stop. Could be mistaken. Absolute low idle seems kind of cantankerous from the motors perspecitve, ie it sounds rough.

I always start it a little off dead slow. Let it warm to were temp needle starting moving off stop before motoring off.

I always start it with it bumped up too. After it starts and warming gup, its running 1400-1600 rpms. Anything lower then that it rattles too much and its runs better with the idle bumped up before starting.

My L3450 started that after the rebuild a yr ago. Altho the pump was not rebuilt Im guessing there was a tiny change in the pump that causes it not to deliver fuel at cranking rpm at closed throttle. It hasnt changed since the rebuild so its stable. It would be interesting to know the reason for it but there seems to be no reason to worry.
