I recently purchased a Wallenstein BX42 Chipper for my BX24. It dawned on me that the drive line protection on the PTO shaft that came with the chipper is really only protecting a device rated at 50HP with a shear pin.

Would I be better off adding a slip clutch on the chipper versus just stalling out the tractor when it jams?

I was considering the cheap HF slip clutch or going by TSC and seeing what they have.

TSC does have slip clutches, I saw 2 the other day there.
Anyway, the shear pin for a 20 a pto shaft is pretty much the same metal. Only difference I know of is they use a smaller diameter for lower HP tractor. How thick is your shear bolt ?

The shear bolt is on the PTO shaft that came with the chipper. From memory I think it was around 3/8"
Since the chipper is rated for up to a 50HP I was thinking the shear bolt on the supplied PTO shaft was also rated around there also.

You know- I just come to think of it- I am retracting what I just said. I think the shear bolt is more of protecting the chipper more then the tractor. If something jams the chipper regardless of the HP- the flywheel wieght is what keeps the chipper going so the shear bolt will shear to protect BOTH chipper and tractor.

i have a shear bolt setup on my 42" bush hog for my bx24. it a 1/2" grade 2 bolt. i think the hog is also rated to 50hp or so and believe me i have no problem snapping that 1/2" bolt:). i whacked a couple things while mowing the woods and snapped the bolt no problem. it didn't take much either. i do prefer a slip clutch because its less a pia but i dont think you have to worry. the bolt you have there will snap before anything else gives.

I have stalled the tractor a couple times with some limbs a little too large for the BX24 to handle.
Should I expect the shear pin to shear in these situations?

Would it be better to let it stall or have a slip clutch that might slip versus stalling the tractor?

This is what I am worried aout.

I have also stalled my rotary cutter a couple times also with out shearing the bolt. So I may need to review both implements.

BTW
With sharp blades and the proper adjustment the BX42 will eat the limbs. I was sending 3-4" green soft woods without any prolems.
The dry hardwoods are another story.....

you can stall the tractor without any issues and shearing the bolt if it just quickly bogs down and dies, its the sudden impact that will do the damage to your tractor or implement. the few bolts i sheared with the hog was when i ran over a couple large hidden stumps. if i was you i would be sure the correct grade bolt is on the shaft. should be 1/2" grade 2 i would think.

I have a BX42 also but on a 7610 (19hp at PTO) and have no concerns. It seems to use the same pin I have on my 4' brush hog. I stalled my tractor twice and both times it was on BIG limbs that I didn't hold back and just let the chipper take them. I never had a bolt shear but there is no "Shock load" when it is stalling. Mine mostly bogs down a bit then only stalls, this really reduces the shock to the tractor so I believe this is why I don't shear a bolt. When you hit something with the brush hog and shear the bolt you mostly don't bog down then stall, it is mostly a sudden harsh shock (hit a rock/stump/etc...)

Thanks for all the replies. I will verify the bolt size in both the chipper and mower.
