Tractor
.
Hi,

I have a farm and I've got several tractors all of which are WAY too big for my garden. Therefore, I need to get a small compact tractor for keeping my garden in good condition - which is about 1/2 acre. I was thinking something along the line of the Kubota BX24. What is your opinion on this tractor?

Thanks...

I think you will find it a very popular choice. I bought mine last year and am very happy with it. I have about 6 acres so it gets quite a bit of use. This spring, we wanted to create an orchard so we bought 40+ trees. My wife and I manage to get all of them in the ground over a weekend. It was hard work but I can't imagine digging the holes by hand. It would have taken a month and someone with a better back than I to get it done :).

The only thing that I regret is the lift ability of the PTO. When I was looking for a chipper, some of the larger units would not work with it because they were too heavy.

Now, having said this, our other house is an acre and I would not consider a tractor for it. It is too high an expense for so little land. Yes, it would be nice to have it but one can buy a lot of smaller units for half the cost from mower to chipper.

A BX24 would work fine but be advised that for garden type work it may have too low of a ground clearance for cultivating etc.

If gardening type chores will be your primary uses for a new smaller tractor I'd recommend looking at the new B series tractors. B2320,B2620 & B2930. They have the taller tires and higher ground clearance desired for grround engagement type work.
They are similar in "footprint" size and weight but have higher lifting capacities and ofcourse a higher ground clearance. They price out close to the BX's.

You could even find a great deal on the now discontinued B7510 & B7610 tractors. These can still be found new at Kubota dealers and are also great little tractors. The new B series are replaceing them.

Good luck

The BX24 is a fine choice for tilling a garden. I have a 40 inch bush-hog tiller and i use it on a slight hill for my garden. Its a real back saver compared to the walk behind rear tine tiller going up hill. I have two separate gardens on 1 acre lot. It really helps with the slip clutch on it when hitting those big rocks. I probably picked up a FEL full of stones this past spring and I hope i got them all ;) so time will tell next year. I have tilled with the with the MMM on but i prefer to take it off when i can. That should speak for itself for the ground clearance.:)

Do you already have a backhoe and a FEL included with those several larger tractors? If so, you may not feel the need to have additional smaller ones on your new tractor. Depending on the condition of your soil, I think you could even look for a used BX1500 for this task. This tractor will not rip and prepare virgin ground for a new garden (but one of your existing big tractors could). If you have loam that's already free of roots, rocks, etc. in "garden soil" you are not going to need to do hard ground engagement work. If you have heavy clay, then you might indeed benefit from going with a BX2660 or one of the more narrow tractors in the B series, all of which are a bit taller than the BX and thus able to straddle furrows without high centering.

Have fun hunting for the right match.

Tom_H and others,

First off...thanks for all your help everybody!

I already have a backhoe (Cat) so I'm not looking at that part of the BX24. But I am looking for a lawn mower attachment for it. What I like about the BX24 is that it really is a compact tractor with a 3-point hitch for tillage equipment.

I am under the impression that the BX24 can be purchased without the backhoe and FEL....Is that true? Or...maybe there is a better choice of tractor for what I need...any suggestions or other brands?

Thanks...

The BX24 without the Backhoe is the BX2350. Same tractor. No BH subframe. The BX2350 offers the FEL as an option. Also, brand new is the BX2660. Has an additional 2.5 horsepower and some other changes. They mow really well BTW.

In addition to a BX23 which is the 2004 version of the BX24 I have 2 BX1500s either of which will do basically the same thing the BX23 will do except backhoe work of course.
You may want to look at Both the BX2350 and the BX1850.
It might be a good idea to check out the used .

I have a 2350 and could not be any happier with the ability to get around "those hard to get to places".

Good luck, Paul
