I cannot remember the exact number that I read the other day as I was flipping through my owner's manual for my BX, but it was something like 3200 RPM to get the 540 RPM PTO speed. (Or maybe it was the 2500 mid-PTO, I forget.) I typically run my engine between 2400 and 2500 for driving and loader work, 2700 when I'm using the hoe. I wanted to sling some mud off the tires tonight before I put the tractor away, so I went out on my road in high gear and revved it up to 2900. The thing was screaming. I cannot imagine 3200 RPM. I mean, I know that this wouldn't be the recommended speed if it weren't okay, but it just seems like it would sound bad and dangerous, from an engine wear or damage perspective. Assure me that I'm just being paranoid.
Also, I never thought to wonder this before tonight, but how does a tach work on a diesel engine? Tachs I've put in cars wired up to the distributor.
