Anyone make a discharge block off for mulching fall leaves? How'd it work.

thx

Made a very basic block from sheet metal for my BX and used it the last 8 or 10 years. Drilled holes to bolt to top of mower under the chute and wired to bottom to bottom of discharge . I left a gap at the back to let the mulched leaves out. I also use the Oregon mulcher blades on my mower all year round. It really makes short work of the leaves.

Not on a BX mower, but I made a discharge chute cover for my commercial walk behind. I used diamond plate and 2 bolts. I generally just keep one bolt mounted so I can pivot the cover up when I want to discharge clippings, or prevent a mulched windrow by pivoting the plate up an inch or so.

I also use Gator mulching blades which work very well worth either an open or closed chute. On my zero turns I use a commercial product made by Advanced Chute Systems. They are pricey, but the ultimate in convenience.

I found that blowing them into small windrows with the chute and then backing over the leaves with my Deere X540 mulches them fairly well without covering the discharge. I only have five trees that drop leaves so not excessive amounts. Down side is this puts pretty heavy mulch in some areas.

My zero turns (Kubota) do not discharge well at all in reverse. I have talked to several people that mulch over the windrows in reverse, and they all seem to be using John Deere mowers.

My "go to" pattern for large amounts of leaves is :
- Throw clippings in (into uncut area) until I get a windrow.
- Close the chute and mulch up the pile while still throwing in.
- Throw out with the chute open, taking just enough of a cut to discharge and spread out the right amount of pulverized leaves. Sometimes this last pass is only 12" or so, and the dense mostly mulched leaves then go through all 3 mower blades one final time.
- Continue throwing in to build up the next windrow. Repeat.

Nobody asked, but that's how I mulch! I'm sure there are plenty of suitable patterns.

I have trouble with the search function, probably related to the keyboard actuator on my computer (me). But I do recall a thread from several years ago. The poster built a discharge blocking plate controlled by a lever that he could activate on the go. I think it had something to do with NOT spraying clippings into his wife's flower beds.

Maybe someone here with better search skills can find it.
