This weekend, I decided to spend working in our 20 acres of woods. There are many downed trees from a tornado in March and it probably hadn't ever been mowed. So I hook up the shredder to my BX2230. The loader and MMM were attached so I left them on. The loader, I knew, would be necessary and the MMM would provide her soft underbelly some protection.
At some point I, in my infinite wisdom, decided I could get between some trees much better if I didn't have the MMM attached, so I took it off. Absolutely brilliant decision.
I wasn't even mowing. I was using the loader to drag out a log, from the tall grass, so I could hook onto it and move it to the burn pile. I heard this awful noise that, while quite loud, was of very short duration. I backed away and saw a stick like thing that the mower had decided to leave standing. There were a number of these in the mowing path. No big deal. Anyway, everything seemed to be working normally so, after a quick fluid check, I decided to carry on.
After dumping the log, I headed back to the same area to hook onto another when, on the ground, I noticed some pieces of white plastic. How I missed them before, I have no idea. I dismounted, picked them up and noticed that they looked like blades from a fan. Weird. I popped the hood to check the radiator fan. It was intact and MUCH larger than what I held in my hand.
Not being able to find anything on the tractor that looked broken, I headed to the house to research the shop manual. Sure enough, this thing the manual referred to as the "HST fan" looks like what I have in my hand. A quick look underneath the tractor verifies it.
Since it was cool this weekend and the fan looked like it couldn't provide a lot of cooling anyway, I put the mower back on and mowed the yard. Decided to stay out of the woods. Guess I know what I will be doing next weekend. The dealer quoted $5 for the part, $60-$90 for labor plus $60 P&D. Think I will try to tackle this one myself. Doesn't look like a big deal, but I am pretty inept mechanically speaking.
I do have a question for you guys though. Doesn't someone here sell a skid plate for my tractor? Using the search function, I was unable to find any reference to one for sale so maybe my memory is faulty.
