BX2200 Mulching Kit Installed - first impressions

Well, I finally took some time last weekend and installed the Kubota mulching kit on my BX2200 mower. It took about one and a half hours to install. The mulch kit consists of 3 steel sheilds that are bolted onto the mower. The shields block the chute and have ribs for airflow to force the grass back into the blades. To install we placed the shields in the correct position and marked the hole locations. We had to drill 15 holes through the mower - those Kubota mowers are tough!! And I have the 54" instead of the 60" (the 60" is a heavier guage).

Yesterday I put the mower to use for the first time with the mulching kit. I am impressed. For a residential lawn it did an excellent job. There was no indication of grass lying around in piles when I was finished. I think it is going to work great, and keep me from having to bag my clippings.

I'm having a tough time visualizing this. Is the kit something you can easily take off if say you let the grass get excessively long since your last mow? Does it even matter if the grass is real long?

Ideally, with the mulch kit installed, your cut should not be more than 1/3 of the total length of the grass. Because of this it works extremely well for you "around the house" grass, but it would not be practical for field use. To remove the kit would require pulling about 12 bolts and removing the plates. It could be done, but it would not be something you would want to do on a regular basis.

What did the kit cost?

The cost of the kit was just over $200. If you were good a metal work you could probably just cut a piece to block the chute and bolt that on. For my purposes though, the kit was the way to go.

Didn't the kit come with the three "hi lift" mulching blades? When I purchased my BX 2200 I had ordered the kit but was so impressed with the way the 60" MMM worked I cancelled the kit order.

That is my only complaint with the kit - the kit is the shields only. The blades are not included. I debated getting the blades, but after using the mower, the standard blades do a great job.
