Has anyone had direct experience with tillers for the BX? My dealer is recommending that I stay with very narrow ones, such as 36" and less. Can I go with larger? It seems that it should be able to handle a 48" to me, but without any direct experience I'm a bit gunshy, especially with the heavy clay we have around here...

Has anyone tried using a disc, either a single or double gang? This is something else i was considering...

Thanks!

I have a 5' Pittsburgh/Taylor disc, double gang with it angled aggressively. I added about 275 lbs to it to improve it's bite. It is still to light except in plowed or tilled ground or early spring with little vegetation to ride up on and softer ground.
I use the tiller most of the time, especially as the ground firms up. I would get a tiller that covers my tracks and a little on the heavy side. Tillers have self destruction built into their soul with bouncing over rocks and the weight helps to get some depth. For a garden it helps to work it deeper with a sub-soiler or middle buster initialy and every 2 years or so - a tiller won't get much deeper than 6". All that flluffed-up soil is decieving. I'd forgo the disc and put the $$ in a serious tiller and some sort of chisel/ subsoiler for 80 -$90.

Tiller old equation used to be 1 hp/1 inch of tilling width. That is now out the window. Many variables in the tillers such as rotor size, blade size, tilling depth, rotor speed, and of course ground speed... can affect the amount of hp necessary but the BX should be able to handle up to a 50 inch tiller such as the Kubota BL52C without a problem. The BX was not made to be a "pulling" tractor so the harrows are probably not an effective solution.

Charliebrn, I agree with the other guys. I have a 40" Bush Hog tiller that I bought to use behind a B7100 that was 40" wide. Worked great, but now I have a 54" wide B2710 and would rather have a tiller wide enough to cover my tracks instead of having it offset to just cover the track on the right side (which is what I'm doing now). I just don't want to spend the money to buy a bigger one since this one has worked great for nearly 5 years with no problems. The BX has more power than the B7100, so I would expect it to handle a tiller as wide as your rear track. The only time the 40" tiller bogged down the B7100 was in heavy clay that was too wet to till anyway.

I have a Ferguson 42" tiller on my BX2200 that weighs in at 350 lbs. I have no problems handling it either power or weight wise. It does a beautiful job of turning sod into a nice planting bed in just two passes.

One should match their tractor size with the proper size of attachment. Just because the tractor can move the attachment does not mean that it will do a good job. Some people say, buy a tiller that covers the wheel tracks, but if the tiller is larger than the tractor can handle properly, the job done by the tiller will not meet the peoples desires. Manufacturers make recommandations for a reason, if you follow the recs you will be happy with the tractor. You do not sell things if people think it is gutless.

Well, thats why I wanted to hear from someone that actually used a tiller. I see the JD 20 HP tractor about the same size as the BX sell a 50" tiller to go with theirs, and the NH Boomer 21HP has a 50" for theirs (although the frame is larger than the BX...), so I don't understand why my dealer is saying to go no larger than 36". The extra width of the 48 would cover my tracks as well as cut down the time i need to till. All in all, I wanted some first hand experience...

I'm glad to see that the 42" seemed to work ok...

Charliebrn; I don't understand the dealer's statement either. Although I haven't used a tiller on my BX, if anything, I would trust the BX Owner's Manual (p. 13). Rotary tiller: 42", 375 lbs maximums.

I have a B2400 and I use a 42" tiller. I could go bigger, but the job thar I do with it is excellant. You may be able to pull a larger tiller than the manual says, but if you are interested in tilling, follow the manual.
