BX2200 front tire question.

I am replacing the front tires on my BX. They had a lot of brown goop maybe fix-a-flat in them which has messed up the bead seat area. I used a wire brush, 100 grit sand paper, and brake clean to get down to the bare metal. I am going to scuff the outside of the wheel and prime then paint the outside and bead area.

I have tire bead sealer on hand. If you were doing this would you use the bead sealer on the refurbished rim ?

I guess it would depend on how bad it is rusted as to whether or not I would use it. It would not be that hard to break it down again if it leaked and put the bead sealer on it.

I recently bought a tractor and the front tires were also filled with brown goo. The tires were bad and my solution was to replace them with used aircraft tires. The tires came with what seem to be new rims. I have some more work to do before putting the tractor into service and I don't know how the aircraft tires will work out.

There may be some unseen rust pits after sanding so I am using a phosphoric acid based metal prep and primer made to deal with rust. If it is not smooth after the initial prime I can use a sandable primer to get it smooth.

I would use the sealer if you have any question as to the condition of the rim. When I had a 2200 I never had a flat and therefore never had to change out a tire so bead sealer wouldn't be a big deal. If you get stuck out in the woods with a flat because the rim failed that could be a real pain. Just saying!

I will have to see what the rim bead seat looks like when I get done. After restoring the wheel I do not want to have to mar it breaking the bead again if I can help it. The inside bead was very difficult to break. I tried several that should have worked but everything slid down the soft side wall even my pickup tire. Maybe if I could have put some air in it. It came off using one of these . After the bead was broken I still had to push it down to the narrow part of the rim using other tools. Yeah I Know there are tire shops for a reason.

Once broken I had to cut the bead wire to get it over the rim. Strange in that the other side was not that bad to break or remove.

The tire shop that I called said that my tires would have to be cut off. They wanted nearly $1000.00 for new foam filled tires including instalation and disposal of the old tires and foam.

Thanks for sharing that now I only feel a little foolish for spending $300+ on tire tools.

If you aren't too far along in this project, check with the Sales Dept at your dealer. He can order wheel and tire assmblies through their "Whole Goods" catalogue for about the same price (or less) than the cost of just the tires. You can also change to the 10" rims used on the later versions of the BX. The tires are the same outside diameter so no problems with the 4 wd ratio.
