I'm sorry to hear about your situation but don't you think buying a new one might give you longer term piece of mind?

A used anything doesn't have much guarantee either...

Sounds like somebody ran the engine hot for way too long a time. Main cause of this is not keeping the radiator screen and fins clean. Excessive heat for too long a time will crack a head on any engine, sure as shoot'n.

I also recommend to go with a new head. I'd consider a used head if I knew where it came from and it carried some sort of warranty stateing that it wasn't cracked or warped.

The D905 engine is designed to run for 1000's of hrs and is a very good engine. If thats all that is wrong with this obviously abused engine then I wouldn't hessitate to put money in it to make it right.

If it means anything to you, your's is just the 2nd post that I can recall of a major engine component failure on a BX in almost 3 yrs of posting here.
Good luck.

If the head is cracked, have you checked the engine block also? When I was turning wrenches, I found a cracked head on a 1966 Plymouth Barracuda with about 15K on the clock. Replaced the cracked head, and put it back together, only to find that the block was also cracked. The owner had put cold water into it when it over heated, and in the end, the engine was trash. He gave me the title in exchange for the work, and the car sat out in the field for a few years... then it went off for scrap. Only wish that I had that car today..

Get you a used head if you can find one and have it gone through before installing. Make sure it is magnflux first. Then have it shaved just enough to true up the deck, do a valve job and put new valve seals installed. You will have a good head just like new for a lot less money.
You might try these people.
Used salvaged tractor parts including John Deere, Ford, Kubota and other Japanese tractor part dealers

Hmmm, let's see $450 for the used head. then all that work for what $200 ? Brings the total up to about $650 and the new one is only $750? Then again, the new one probably doesn't have valves and may need a seat dressing to match the valves that probably need to be ground too.

thanks for all the reply's, ive called everyone i can find and it seems the only place that new they had the right head was weavers in pa. they want 450 plus shipping and they guaranty it to be good. of course the gaskets from kubota are almost a 100.

this tractor came from a local town and obviously the operator had no training in operation. they may have known about the problem when they took it to auction, the oil had just been changed and the radiator was full of clear water. they brought 2 identical units to the sale, the other being in very nice condition. it brought a very nice price of 5250+ 10%. the one i bought was in the high 3k range and had some bumps and bruises but the same hours. (480) pre inspection didnt expose the head gasket because we couldnt run it long enough. thats the story, thanks for the help. mark
