BX22 & RPM

I was a little surprised that my new BX22 did not have a tach. In the few hours I've spent playing with the FEL & box scaper, it's pretty clear that you need adequate rpm to do various tasks. And if it isn't wound up enough, it just plain says 'no'.

Do any other BX models have tachs?

Guess I'll just rev it up till it seems right. Or, I guess they are availble as options? It's not something I was asked when making the purchase. To tell the truth, I assumed it would come with one.

The tach on my backhoe doesn't work, but it's a 580B so it's no surprise /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif ! LOL I don't really care either, I just go by what 'sounds' right and by how the machine is performing. I didn't use the tach on the B20's I used either. I just plain 'ol go by how the machine is doing, if it needs more, great, then I can tone it down a little when the time is right.

None of the BX models have a tach. You can purchase one called Tiny Tach (sp?) if you desire. Basically I just go with what it needs to accomplish the task, rarely full throttle. I found it very benefical when learning the backhoe (FEL too to some extent) to keep the RPMs low so that I didn't jerk the thing around so bad. It won't do as much work at low RPM, but everything moves slower and gives you more control while learning.
I think the only time I have used almost full throttle was heavy loader work and bush hogging thick bahia grass (ouch!). A medium duty 4' hog in tall thick grass is definitely almost too much for the BX!

Yeah, I've discovered that slower rpm makes movements with the FEL easier & smoother- - not for attacking a dirt or gravel pile, but getting the bucket in place & dumping.
I'm sure the owners manual says to use the MMM at full throttle. I did not do that - - I backed off a bit, but still at a fairly high rpm. Seemed to work fine - - no where near lugging the engine.

If you mow, use the FEL for lots of lifting, etc you need to keep the RPMs up. It lets the hydro pump easier, besides lugging is harder on the tractor than running at higher RPMs, it was designed for higher RPMs.

TDOG:
do a search on tinytach and you will find a great little electronic tach that reads the rpms from the pulse of the fuel going thru one of the injector lines. It is easy to mount using velcro and doesn't require drilling any holes.
You will need to know the OD of the fuel lines on your machine. Mine was 6mm

I'm pretty sure that the engine has a rev limiter on it so that you won't damage it. Mine does - and a good thing, too. My wife seems to think that it should be run wide open all the time. Makes me cringe listening to the engine at full while she's barely creeping along /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif.

On an unrelated note, how does one "educate" your spouse /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif? Ah, just kidding /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif...
