I searched long and hard for the right match of a chipper to my BX22, one that would get the job done and be as inexpensive as possible (we all's like to keep ours money, eh?). I'd read on all the tractor lists about how you really 'needed' to have a hydraulic feed otherwise you'll be busted up after about 4 hours work. Trouble was. all those hydraulic feeds coupled with a 4" - 5" chipper equals something north of $ 5K as an admission price. Do I really need to spend that much?

Then I looked at the cheap chippers, the ones made in China and the ones like the Dr. Chipper PTO model by www.countryhomeproducts.com. I almost went for the Dr. Chipper model as it had an appealing price point, but the open design of it didn't look as safe as some of the others and the flywheel seemed a tad on the light side.

After much teeth-knashing, I decided on the Woods 5000 Chipper (same as the 5" Bearcar Chipper Shredder) and crossed my fingers that I'd not regret the hydraulic feed models. Plunked down $ 2,500 and picked it up today. Seemed to be about the right weight for the BX22 and has a 5" capacity.

One I hooked it up on the Class 1 I went out in the woods for a test drive.......HOLY CHIPPED WOOD !! This thing is an animal....it just gobbles everything up as fast as you can toss it in the chute. I ran it for about 2 hours and was amazed at how much material the chipper gobbled up and the little itty-bitty pile of debris left behind. I also can't figure out why so many clamor for hydraulic feeds.....one you get the branch in, it gobbles it up by itself so it hardly seems worth paying twice as much for a chipper to get that feature.

The Woods 5000 fits perfectly behind the BX series tractors and the engine bogs down only on very long, thick branches (14' or longer, 4" thick). I'll probably try to limit length of the branches to 8' or so with a quick chainsaw cut.

PTO chippers are definitely an improvement over loading everything into the pickup and taking it to the county dump (my old method of wood debris removal). MUCH faster, and less hassle than to simply grind it all up.

And it's kind of a violent attachment - as least as compared to something like a core aereator, which makes it all the more fun to use <grin>. Every time I tossed a branch in the hopper I couldn't help but think of the movie "Fargo".

Woods 5000 Chipper : RECOMMENDED.

Photo 2, yes, that big poplar branch in the picture went all in the chipper on one shot.

Thanks for the review on the chipper..... don't know if I can justify the price, but it is good to know that a BX 22 will handle such a monster. If I bought a chipper, I think my wife might become suspect as to what I have in mind..... LOL..... (remember the air line pilot in CT??).
Time for me to show my lack of knowledge about the product.... what is the large opening at the top for??? Is it hard to mount on the tractor and how does the tractor handle the weight? Did it come fully assembled or was it a do it yourself project? thanks... the Junkman

The top opening is the shedder part of the unit. You toss leaves and branches under 1 1/2" in that hopper and the flail knives get it. Rather challenging to push them past the guard/kickback brushes!

The Woods 5000 came fully assembled, and my Kubota dealer cut the PTO shaft to fit my BX22. All I had to do was carry it home in the pickup and hook it to the hitch. Came out of the pickup easily using the FEL.

The Woods 5000 is also identical to the Bearcat 70554. So if you ever get serious about them, shop price on both as the only difference is the paint job. Mine was tagged at $ 3,079 at the tractor store, and we settled on $ 2,500.

I think these will hold resale value well - as you can't hardly find used ones in this class.

Dealer says as long as you keep dirt out of the chipper part, they're very low maintenance and the knives will last well.

Duane,
I also have a Bearcat 70554 and have been very pleased with it. I agree that the additional money for a hydraulic feed would be a waste. Once you get it to the chipper, it takes care of it with very little help. I made some wood forks for my loader bucket and haul all my debris to my "chipping area". The thing I really like about this chipper is the small chips it makes. I pile it high and turn it through the winter and it makes great compost/mulch for my garden and landscaping.

The blades seem to stay sharp for a very long time. They are also very expensive. I decided to buy a spare set, until I priced them.... about $150 for 4 double edged blades. I just priced having them sharpened professionally at $7.50 an edge or $60.... So.... I went out and bought a wet grinder so I could do it myself. The blades really are quite easy to access and sharpen with the right equipment. I got a Delta 23-710 grinder and it seems to work great, with a few modifications.

Thanks for your comments and pictures. I've been wondering about these units as it's the likely choice for us once SWMBO kills our smaller gas-powered shredder/chipper. I was worried about it being too big for the BX, but obviously, it's not!

HI, do you have an inexpensive site for replacement pto shaft? it is hard to find that 1 inchround bore end with the 1/4 inch keyway.

Do you have an inexpensive site for a replaclement pto shaft? They want 280 bucks for one from Woods. It is hard to find that replacment 1 inch end yoke round bore end with the 1/4 inch keyway.
Thanks, Rich
