Hi all,
I had to replace one of my front tires so I ordered a new tire from the dealer. Checked with local farm tire dealers and none of them carried that size. When it arrived I noticed the tread design and size where both different. Original tire was a 16 x 6.50 x 8 and the new tire is a 16 x 7.50 x 8.

Sitting on my work bench there was 1 - 1 1/2" height difference between these tires both unmounted. Installed and driving in 4WD with a load in the FEL I now hear what sounds like the tires slipping when driving on grass and on gravel. I have not taken the time to measure the actual rolling distance per revolution but was curious to see if anyone knew what the acceptable tolerance was for different tire sizes on drive axles?

in 2WD there is no noise which is what I would expect.

TIA

due to the disparate rolling diameters of the OEM tires and your new tires, you are binding the drivetrain in 4wd. this will not end well for your tractor -- it will certainly wear the tires faster, and increase the strain on the drivetrain components. you need the correct diameter tires.

That is my concern also, problem is... which size is the correct size?

I think what I will do is get the tractor on the concrete drive. Put a chalk mark on the sides of the tires and then roll it one revolution of the rear tire and see which front is the closest to having the mark in the same location.

Anybody have any other thoughts or comments?

Does anyone else have the 16 x 6.50 x 8 tires on their BX18**?

TIA

Go here and read about front to rear ratios: Can I use a different size tire on my 4wd tractor

You will be able to figure out if you are within the acceptable range or not.

Don't forget, the formulas used are assuming both fronts are the same. Since you only changed one of your fronts, the difference is less dramatic (less of a problem).

If you can provide the diameter of your rears and fronts, I can get a general idea by using the forlumas in that link.

RJ,
thanks for the link. I knew the fronts where suposed to pull the rear but I didn't to what percentage.

Looks like a fun week end project.
