I asume I have to replace the alat. How hard its it? (I asume not much more that on a car) How costly is it. (I assume much more than a car)

Before you go and drop some $'s on a new dynamo try the attached troubleshooter 1st. It could be a loose connection, bad regulator or bad dynamo.
Another option you may consider would be to upgrade to the high output alternator kit. I believe they list for around $250 and the kit replaces both the dynamo & regulator. Check 1st to make sure it'll work on the 18hp BX as it's primarily marketed towards the 23hp and up BX's.

I just had a starting problem with my BX1800. Was running just fine, shut it off, went to start, nothing... wouldn't even crank. I tried everything I could think of. Fuses, safety switches, had the battery tested, even pulled the starter and had it tested.
Finally decided to load it on the trailer and take it to the dealer. Tech looked at it, checked nearly everything I checked. Then he started wiggling the positive battery cable and said it didn't feel right. He cut off the lug and crimped on a new one and whamo.. it started right up.
He mentioned that he's seen this before and said that the solder was beginning to let loose from the lug. So you might check your battery cable lugs just to see if they're the culprit.

Well seeing how the test for the voltage reg seemed a little complex. I just check to see if the Alt. was putting out and it was so it had to be the voltage reg... Replaced that and all is fine now. I will have to say with all the room under the dash they sure put that thing in a hard to reach spot
The parts guy said "no way was he replacing the reg" as something else had to have cause it and put my wife over the the service guy who said it must be the ALT.
After telling him that I checked the alt and it is still putting out 15-17 volts he said" well it must have been a bad regulator we will get you a new one....sorry about that"

Well I go home and test it all again.
Reglator test fine
Alt. test fine
After a few times testing it Alt test bad then good then bad....you know those little push plugs on the wires from the alt??? well one was againest the starter and had broke off in side the plug...
when you unplug it and twist it up to tast it the two wires maded contact about 90% of the time
