New member in the market for a tractor in the very near future. My question is this. I have about 1 acre of grass and 5 acres of pasture to mow. Will the 54mmm handle both of those? I'm concerned it may handle the pasture but not cut the grass neatly? I would love input on this! Thanks.

I have a 60" MMM on my BX23 with about 1 acre of grass to mow. It does a great job cutting the grass; better than my Craftsman garden tracker ever did. Additionally, I just cut some grass in the adjoining property that had not been cut for 3 months. The grass was at least 18" high and it did a great job.

You won't be disappointed with the MMM. I think your only concern should be upgrading to a 60" deck.

Which would require upgrading to a BX1800 I think. When I was shopping for a smaller tractor last summer, I am pretty sure that the max MMM size for the BX1500 was 54" and that to get a 60" MMM you had to step up to the BX1800.

For the little price difference, I decided to buy the BX2200 which I am quite happy with.

As far as pasture mowing, why beat up a MMM that costs a lot? You might buy a small rotary cutter for the pasture. I would. Then again, maybe the original poster's pasture is about the same as my yard... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif In which case, the MMM would not be beat up too much and should work fine. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I believe you are correct regarding the possibility of having to move up to the 18hp engine, though I believe I saw some information on the web that indicated a 60" MMM could be used. It would be worth looking into this if he is serious about wanting a 60" deck.

I would agree with Bill about getting a small rotary cutter for the pasture.

I mow a small “in the rough” area behind my yard by setting my deck to the 4” setting and it works well. I can cut some pretty heavy grass set high like this.

One thing to consider, if the ground is very rough in your pasture, the relatively small tires will give you a very rough ride, especially at any speed. Buying a tractor with larger diameter tires will help a lot with this problem.

I have a 60" MMM on my BX23 and I mow pasture, lawn and all in between. It does a danny job. Even the rocks I mow look better . As far as I'm concerned if you have to baby the darn thing it ain't worth the 1000+ price tag.
I use the 3" setting on the lawn and the 4" on the pasture.
To me the biggest problem with the MMM is the grass chute on the right. I've already dented it by forgetting to keep trees to the left of me (Jokers to the right). So now I keep it in the up position.
I don't know if a 60" will fit on a BX1500 (I don't think so, something the dealer said when I was shopping, something about the PTO HP?) but I'm sure the 54" will cut just the way you like it!!!

Henro is right. You would need a Bx1830 for th 60mmm. For that matter though, you would probably need it for any rotary cutter as well. I do not know of one small enough for that tractor, maybe someone else does. (Henro?) I probably would not want to mow 5 acres with a 48 inch rotary though anyway and IF you could get one, that would be the biggest possible. Bottom line..If you have the little extra $, get a BX1830 and certainly for very little more the 2230. You will be very happy, and YES, the 60mmm will mow your grass and pasture quite nicely!

If your field is smooth you can cover a lot of ground with the BX1500 at 8mph. It is a good machine and the 54" deck is very tough. I believe the 60" should fit and would work fine, though it is not recommended by Kubota. I never run out of power with my BX1500 using the 54" deck, or the 36" tiller. The rare times I could use more power is when I'm pulling the box blade.

I have not seen one but KK makes a small rotary cutter, I think it is 40" and costs about $600 around here at TSC. And landpride makes a 42" which I saw at my dealer's last time I was there. My guess is that one of these might work on the BX1500. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
