Kubota BX 1500 and Bolens ST125
I went to several dealers Saturday. Looked at a BX22-1830, Massey2300 and a JD 2210. The TZ was quoted at $11,271 with 60" MMM. The BX 2230 w/ 60" MMM was $10,145 and the BX 1830 was $9,705 with 54" MMM. The JD 2210 was quoted at $13,999 with 62" MMM, FEL and for Saturday only, a box blade. I think the FEL was about $2800-$3000 option for the all the other tractors. All dealers had pros and cons for their units and others. The Massey seems to have rather high hydraulic flow 6.1 gpm vs the NH at 3.9 gpm. The NH guys says the Massey is foaming and burning the hydraulic fluid. The JD and the BX are rated 1 to 2 gpm lower. Not sure what/who to believe. I think I'm at the point where I might just get a large Lawn Tractor and rent equipment when I need. I'm confused....... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

With only 2 acres to deal with you could just go with a traditional tractor. Is your only requirement to mow the lawn?

You are correct, most of the use would be for mowing. I wanted something that could move some dirt. Our clay soil is extremely rough and in need of leveling. I figured a couple of years (maybe 5) of bringing in sand, leveling it, leting the clay open and take my sand away, bringing in sand and repeating would eventually yield a nice smooth level ground. Tilling up a large area for a garden was also a consideration. I'm leaning more towards a GR2100 with a front blade (only attachment) and rent the heavier stuff when I need it. I just need to see if it can mow as well as my beat up Bolens. There's something to be said for a mow deck that rides on the ground rather than hang from the tractor.

I'm not trying to sway you away from a BX model but you could do fine with a Craftsman, JD Sabre series or something of the sort and rent whatever you need in the future for small projects.
If you see the need now for the future of a FEL tractor combo then the 1530 would do you well. I really don't think a 2230 would be justified with the low requirements your looking at.
Price is the difference. A rider would be under 3k. A BX1530 would be 10, but you'd get the FEL and a 54" MMM. And the diesel would last you possibly 20-30 years worry free.

A GR2100 is about $7K. 54" deck, 3cyl deisel 22hp (?). 1530 is 2cyl deisel 15 hp(?) 54" deck but can have attachments. I have to think about that. What is the reliability of the 2cyl? Does it have the power to push the 54" deck? Can I lift more than a 100 lbs with the FEL with 15hp? Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Nothing special. '92 or '93 ST125. Still in good shape but the mow deck could use a replacment. Not available. I like the way it mows but the deck could use a little more weight.

A BX1530 takes an LA171 loader. The numbers are the lift capacity in kilograms as I was told here. You should be able to life approx. 375 pounds with it. Remember if you do that you more than likely will need ballast to counter the front weight unless you want the tractor to life up on you.

The HP of a diesel isn't the issue. It's the torque which is unreal in these machines.

Lets see.....will it move a 54" deck. Yes, you won't even know it's there.

Reliability....I've never read anyone here with a 1530 complaining about issues with the 2cyl other than noise and vibration but they all have some. Go test drive one and see for yourself.

The GR is designed to cut grass period. It's primary function is only that. In the BX cutting grass is 1 thing it does well. It also lets you use a FEL, 3pt attachments to blow snow, till, grade ect..ect... You can't compare them in that regard because they do different things.

If you want a Cadillac of a grass cutter get the GR. If you want something for total landscape ability get the BX

You've been a great help. I appreciate it immensly. IIRC the 1530 is also actually physically smaller than the 1830 and the 2230, but still stouter than a GT. And probably cheaper than most GT's also. My dealer didnt have much to say about the 1530. I guess he was trying to move the three 2230's or the three 2100's he had on the lot. I'll study the 1530 a little more and go back and see if he will work with me. Thanks again.

Steve
