I've been searching all morning and can't find an answer. I am buying a 65 year old rusty 2 bottom plow from a farmer in Canada. What paper work is required for each country? I've been advised to use a broker, but for a $350 purchase that seems to be a bit much.

Thanks for any advice

If you are going to Canada to pick it up yourself, it is easy.
You just pick it up, and drive across, and declare it to the US customs agent at the border.
If you are going to have it shipped, it will likely be cost prohibitive.

I will be driving 8 hours each way to pick it up. Thanks for the reply!

Stop at US Customs on the way to Canada and ask them what they want for the import.

I drove to Minnesota to pick up a 12" 3ph wood chipper earlier this year. There was no economical way for me to hire a trucking and brokerage firm. Even with those load bid sites. The lowest bid I think was a couple of grand, so a friend and I made a road trip.

I researched it and apparently didn't have to claim the CASH to US customs, but at the border they claimed otherwise and wanted to see, touch and smell the money!

Canada customs just laughed at us for taking an apparently longer route, couldn't care less about seeing the machine and only wanted their HST tax! Quite funny actually.

Make sure you stop at a carwash and wash all of the dirt and junk off of it.

Depending on the particular US customs agent you get, it is quite likely that there will be no charge at the US border.
If you were going the reverse direction, Canada customs would charge their particular provincial HST (Harmonized Sales Tax)

Just brought a Canadian made boat and trailer back.

Don’t waste money on a broker. Have a Bill of Sale: they are usually witnessed in CA rather than notarized.

Tell them you are a US citizen importing the article for personal use. There is not any duty (assuming it was made in US or Canada). They will fill out the form and you’ll be on your way.

The particular plow was made in the USA, most likely in 1949. The tag will show it was made in Butler, PA. I'm hoping it is an easy trip.

A couple of years ago, three of us headed north to visit, help some former co-workers who had purchased a fishing camp in Canada. At the boarder, the driver cheerfully answered the agents questions. What was the purpose of our visit? The answer was we were going to help them close down the camp and do a little technical support on a Web cam that was causing problems. We were hauled into the station and given a lecture on not taking business away from local Canadian firms. Lesson learned. Thirty minutes later we were on our way. As Joe Friday would say on Dragnet, "Just the facts mama. nothing but the facts."
