We are supposed to buy our JD 4120 on Monday. Should I consider
the 3720? Last Chance! Here's the opportunity for the Yanmar lovers to speak out strongly... I'm still leaning 4120. Thanks to other members
who sent along 4000 twenty series input from the front: pastures, forests, and barnyards...
Bye, from snowy Vermont.

4120

I just know we will figure out which screw to turn and you get a 4720...

I sat on one yesterday, and it sure felt NICE!!!

I passed on the 3720. I figured the 4120 had more cu. in. and the engine would be on snooze mode to crank out the equivalent HP. More longevity. They're squeezing quite a bit of power out of the inter-cooled 3720. My 3cents. Bye the bye, what has your dealer quoted you on set-up, delivery, freight, etc. I'm trying to work out a deal on a 4120 or 5105 in Alaska and it's difficult to recognize what's a fair deal opposed to handing my check book to the dealer to fill in whatever amount he feels like. Thanks. AKfish

In our tractor casino the dealer always wins! Our Deere dealer in Walpole, NH has a great reputation and charges accordingly. They wrote
up the 4120 with eHydro, 400x, 448, extra svc, R1's, chains, for $32,000.
( Tax free New Hampshire ) Ouch! They bolt on some nice freebie work lights to the ROPS. They truck it over the river to VT for free, and will truck it free back to dealer during its warranty period. I get a weeklong trial to decide, and if I'm unimpressed they truck it back, "with no questions asked..." A year after purchase, if the 4120 seems inadequate, they'll upgrade or exchange for a maximum loss of $1500. They seem to be straight shooters, and are Gold whatever rated, so I went with them. I'm going with the Deere financing program, which expires Monday supposedly. Our 9 year old is actually suggesting that he do his homework! John Deere - the ultimate incentive...

A couple things scare me about the 4000-20's

1) Cold starting. While this engine has been used in the skid loader for some time, it has had some cold start issues. Late 2004 or so they increased the compression to help this.

2) Startup rev-up. The engine immediately revs to 2000rpm and then falls back. While most tractors fuel hard at cold start, they seldom rev up.

3) Stanadyne makes the fuel system. Some may like their old rotary (Roosa Master) type pumps, but they gave GM a bick black eye with their pumps for the 6.5. While it is true that the 6.5 has other "issues" the pump thing is the major one.

4) Yanmar is just so darn reliable. Yes it is imported, but the Deere 250? series is made in Mexico

I felt the 400-10/3000-20 series was a bit small for my needs, but the 400-20 is too big. It would be nice to have a size between. Since there is none, I went to the larger tires which kinda gets me there. YMMV...

PS. the 4000-20 hoods lay on the muffler when propped open. Not an issue for most people, but a major oversight on JD engineering. The 3000-20 doesn't seem to touch. Could be because it is smaller/lighter...

I researched this a bit. The 4120 and 4320 have same hardware. 4520, and 4720 as well. Just a matter of settings between the two groups, and I'm sure the smaller ones can be set up to overlap the bigger ones.

Special tool, and tamper evident as I am lead to believe...

I'd be curious to know from those of you owning the 4000-20's how the air filter is to service. It looks like it could be a whole lot simpler design. From the looks of the 3000-20 thge end cap slides off without any tools, but the 4000-20 looks like you need to maybe undo some hose clamps and/or unstrap the box from it's mount.

Hi gang, I've just joined the forum.
I'm about ready to buy a 4320, but haven't yet made the final decision between it and the 4120. I'm pretty sure the 4120 will do everything I need but I don't want to cut it too close. Still, three grand for five more HP sure seems like alot of money to me.
If I were to go with the 4120, how difficult would it really be to kick it up? Once the engine was out of warranty of course....

On another note- Anyone know offhand where the jaw control is located if I go with a JD 4 in 1 bucket? I saw one by WR Long in the pictures section that was a toggle button on the face of the joystick. Haven't seen a JD setup yet.
