I was considering importing a Jinma Tractor, backhoe, loader. & ATV directly from China. I have imported heavy equipment parts from Korea before without much trouble.

I wanted to ask two questions:
1: Is there any reason why importing from China
would be harder than importing from Korea?
2: Does anyone have a contact that I could work
with at the factory to try and get up a container
order?
Thanks Techdude /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I have a few chinese directories that i use all the time.

www.ec21.com
www.alibaba.com
www.made-in-china.com

I personally have never ordered a container full of something but im sure there are taxes and terrifs and a whole lot of other stuff. Since im guessing the USA is more friends with Korea, i suppose it would be easier then from "enemy" china.

We import containers of tractors/implements from China and I don't think the process is any different than what you experienced from S. Korea. Remember that pretty much anything with an engine involves the EPA, some things have duties, etc. Other expenses include customs bond, cost to "x-ray" the contianer, I have heard of people having to pay to unload and reload so someone can inspect. It can get expensive. If the container stops and is waiting on you, you pay. If you cant get it unloaded in two hours you may have to pay wait time. It is hard to pin down all the expnese, but add about $ 300-$500 onto you best "all inclusive" shipping bid and you should be safe.
For epa info for off road engines carefully look at:
http://www.epa.gov/otaq/imports/forms/3520-21.pdf

Of course any on road vehicles will involve DOT as well as EPA.

The internet is loaded with sources who will broker tractors and ATVs. Most brokers will require full payment prior to shipment or Irrevocable sight L/C there yours when the leave China, whether or not they clear customs on this side.

you might look at www.chinaimporters.com (I have not used)
or www.tractorchina.com (I have used)

It is difficult to mix product from different factories in a container unless you work with someone in China who can combine the shipment. you may need to get a container of ATVs and a separate container of tractors. China has two or three major ports you would have to get all your products FOB Shanghai or Qingdao to mix.

Many smaller dealers are finding it more expediant and less risky to buy from a state side distributor.

If your container is pulled for a general inspection, sometimes random, sometimes because you are a new importer, sometimes because there are discrepancies in the paperwork, sometimes because of the country of origin, the fees are transportation costs to inspection site (they don't go to your container, your container is taken to them) and $1000 for the inspection.

Did anyone else hear the Democratic response to the State of the Union address where they proposed general inspections for all containers?

I think the hardest part about importing is the New York Customs. It seems like those guys always hold my merchandise up for weeks at a time doing their inspection thing.

It is a long standing joke around here that even the drug smugglers get their goods through customs before we do. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You're right on there. I'm still waiting on parts that arrived in New York before Christmas. Always one more hoop to jump through.
