We are buying a 2005 16 x 72 Clayton Mobile Home and I just found out it does not have a tongue on it. Is this a big deal? How much are they? How much of a hassle is it to get one put on and who does that kind of work? Please help. Does Clayton sell them?We haven't wired the money yet, but we are getting a really good deal on it and hate to pass it up. I need some expertise!

We bought a two year old repossed doublewide in '86 and it had no tongue or wheels. The moving and setup was included in the price and when it came time to move, the movers had the tongue and wheels for each half and when they got it set, the tongues and wheels left with them. I wouldn't be surprised if that's not the normal way they sell them now.

I've had many mobile classrooms/labs moved for the educational institution I work for. If you hire a good moving crew they should have everything needed to move mobile home.

I think now if you buy a new mobile home, the contract says they keep the axles (hubs, tires, wheels, and springs included), but what I've seen was that they removed the tongue when they set it up, but put that A-frame tongue under the house. And from what I've seen they just drop the nuts and bolts where they fall. The mover brings new ones.

in need of help,

A word to the wise would be to get a price on moving and setup (blocking and utility tie in) from a reputable mobile home mover. Turn key job, includes fixing any damage from movng, ( I have seen some substancial damages inside on walls ceilings and floors).

Then add this to your purchase price to determine the real cost.

I might also add that you need to be sure that you get a clear title from DMV for the trailer, the laws for MH's have changed dramatically in the last three months.

Some just bolt on and some are welded. I have had to weld dozens of them back on at a company that I used to work. They had a customer that rented those office trailers and portable classrooms and they would set them up and cut the tongue off. I would have to weld them back on when they came back off lease.
A mobile home mover should know how to handle it either bolt on or weld back on.
A neighbor had me cut them off his doublewide because the insurance company would not write a policy with it still on. ?????

I am trying to find out, can you put a hitch on either end of a mobile home? Asking because the end we have our hitch on is almost impossible to get to because of the way it was pulled up into our yard, if we were to ever sale ours and get something different just not sure how they would get it out..

The mobile home movers have little remote controlled "tractors" on crawler treads that fit under the frame and can piviot it on a dime or move it an inch. You will really need a mobile home mover, and don't expect them to be cheap since they have all the specialized gear to move and set them.

If they pulled it in there and then removed the tow vehicle, they should be able to return with a tow vehicle and move it out. Unless they blocked it in with something like another mobile home, a building, trees, etc... call the professionals and get an estimate.

Just get reputable MH mover to do the job, its bigger than you think.... Good moving company will know how to handle any situation as no wheels or axles or tongue.... Best thing is you take your "lady" spend a couple of days someplace other then where "moving event " it to take place.... Lived in "mobile home" park for 18 years watched them come and go....
