BUYERS:WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS ON E-BAY!!

We recently encountered a scam on E-Bay! A lady, who had only sold clothing up to this point, was advertising a Kubota L2600Dt, 2002, with 149 hours, for a Buy It Now price of $3450! She also had another Kubota,GST L4310 with 87.3 hrs, for $3750! Of course we jumped on it! The location said Illinois, and there was free shipping! But we had to be approved first. So we e-mailed her, desperately wanting to be "choosen". We were (as I am sure many people were). She said she was in the Netherlands (strange, I thought she was in Ill.!), and the tractor had to be shipped by boat, taking about 2 weeks. She asked that we send our money Western Union, but to have someone elses name as the reciever. She would then know that we mean business, and hold it as a deposit, until we recieved the tractor. Then we would have 3 days to make sure we wanted it. If so, we would then change the recievers name to hers, and the deal would be done. If we did not want it, she would arrange for the shipping back!
It sounded pretty shakey to me. I discovered the SAFEST way to do these kinds of transaction, for anything of great value, is to use an ONLINE ESCROW SERVICE, for a small fee based on the amount you need to escrow (it was going to cost us $1o6.95 for the cheaper one), they will hold the money until you recieve your item and approve of it, then they release it to the seller. Very nice! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
So I e-mailed this lady back and told her that we prefered to do it this way,(and we would assume the escrow cost). But she wouldn't do it, saying that she is experiencing someone not letting go of the money right now on another transaction where she used this service. She kept trying to convince us that she was a serious E-Bayer, that all her feedack was positive. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
But strangely enough, she SUDDENLY was not a member anymore! We could not view the tractors either, disappeared! Someone else must have caught onto her and reported her and she was removed. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I contacted Western Union and told them what this person wanted to do with this transaction, they laughed and said they run into this scam thousands of times each year..DON"T DO IT!! The person can find out who the recievers name is you put on there, (she suggested my fathers name, who was also trying to communicate with her trying to figure this out), and have a fake ID made up and get the money, and split! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Ok, settled, we bluntly cut her off, telling her that either Escrow- or NO GO! We have not heard from her since (yesterday). So I just wanted to share this story with you, incase you run up on any "too good to be true deals". I know probably most of yall are veterans at buying tractors and could see through this instantly, but there are some of us out there that are ready to pounce on any good deal, and could get taken, /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif so please just keep this in mind, and BE AWARE!!
Again, a really safe method of payment is escrow. E-Bay has a few they recommend, I would go with those, because they are "proven". There may be some other methods, like using your credit card, if they will cover you. Just be safe! ..and Happy Buying! JH /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: BUYERS:WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS ON E-BAY!!

This SCAM has been discussed before on here before. What happens is the scammer sends out e-mails that look like they are from ebay asking you to update your account information. Some unsuspecting sucker gets this e-mail and clicks the link which looks like an e-bay link and they then enter their user name and PASSWORD and they have just given the scammer all they need. The scammer goes in and lists big ticket items at "too good to be true prices". They usually list things like ATVs, motorcycles, tractors and such. All the ones I have seen say you have to be a pre-approved bidder. Once I e-mailed a guy telling him he was a scammer and he acknowledged that he was a scammer and was proud of it. My brother in laws friend had it happen to him last year. He pulled up his list of items he was selling which is usually comic books and videos and lo and behold he had a couple of motorcycles for sale. He had filled out the e-mail that had been sent to him a week or so earlier. They usually hit people with high positive feedback. The lesson here is be vigilant, if it sounds too good to be true, well then it probably is. And never ever acknowledge ebay or any other e-mail asking you to update user info. If you think it might be legit then go to the actual website and do it from there. You can usually set the preferences on you e-mail delivery to give more than just the e-mail address of the sender. If you do this it will give IP address and the real e-mail address not just one that someone has masked with EBAY.

theelves, I think "if it sounds too good to be true...." sums it up nicely. I am so glad you didn't get caught up in this scam /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

Re: BUYERS:WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS ON E-BAY!!

I have never even looked for tractors on Ebay, being very skeptical about buying a major purchase from someone I do not even know. Thanks for posting the heads up and the excellent advice. Glad you were not scammed.

Re: BUYERS:WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS ON E-BAY!!

I have sold many tractors on ebay and the only scam I have had occur is when a buyer gave me what was supposed to be a certified check and it wasn't and he stopped payment. I had him arrested and we are waiting on a court date.

Re: BUYERS:WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS ON E-BAY!!

I made a purchase of a small item, total cost $14.25, and sent a postal money order to the address provided, using certified mail. The seller didn't pick up the mail, and after a month it was returned to me. I think this guy was planning on taking the money and not sending the item purchased. However, when he got notice of a certified letter decided he didn't want to commit postal fraud. Good thinking on his part, the Govenment Proscecutors have very little sense of humor. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: BUYERS:WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS ON E-BAY!!

I have bought many items on ebay including a tractor. Most are honest auctions but there are those who are not. Just use common sense and you will be fine. On high dollar items, ask lots of questions. I usually pay for expensive items when I pick them up. If you can't see it use paypal insurance, it doesn't cost that much.

Re: BUYERS:WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS ON E-BAY!!

I thought EBAY was just an alternate spelling for SCAM/Rip-Off.

Re: BUYERS:WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS ON E-BAY!!

It amazes me that you can't flame another member....... It is against the rules to bash one tractor brand verses another tractor brand, but the Moderators will allow the members to bash and trash the reputation of another on line business. If e Bay is as bad as all you people make it out to be, then why are their profits what they are and why is the stock market embracing the stock with rising prices??? Give up the bashing of e Bay.... there are a lot of honest hard working people there that are not doing any thing wrong and there are also a lot of honest people there that bid and make purchases that are successful every moment of every day. As one of the honest sellers and buyers on e Bay, I am tired of the thrash that you people are spewing out and personally find it offensive. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
