I'm installing an invisible dog fence around 7 acres of hilly land. When I went to HomeDepot to rent a DitchWitch, they talked me into renting a BlueBird BedBug. On paper, this machine was ideal - it digs a trench, lays line, and covers the trench back up. In practice, it was less than ideal. If used on a lawn, it may be perfect, but on 7 aces of field it got clogged and hit rocks. When that happened, it didn't bury the wire. The worst part is that the machine is not self propelled so I had to pull the thing over the 7 acres.
The wire installed by the BedBug is only a inch or so under ground and I seem to be having trouble with either groundhogs or deer pulling the wire out. The wire does cross a major deer traffic route and three times I've found the wire pulled out of the ground and broken.
So, I think the wire has to be buried deeper. I think 4-6" would be ideal. Would a sub soil dig a trough deep and clean enough to bury a wire? Or would I be better served by renting the DitchWitch trnacher? The DitchWitch trencher rents for $80/4 hours or $120/day and a King Kutter sub soil at TSC can be had for ~$130.
Which is better a sub soil or renting a trencher?
