Bushog Gearbox Grease

I see many people using "00" Grease for older gearboxes with chronic leaks , esp where replacing seals would cost nearly what the old hog is worth, etc. I have been using Tractor Supply "00" Grease in an old JD 413 hog for years but finding it harder to locate lately. Several questions:

1) What viscosity is "00" grease ?
2) Do most brands of it have some additive that tends to help with poor seals ? Does that really work ?
3) What is Lucas Hub Oil and is that suitable for the same thing ?
4) What other alternatives are there?

Lucas hub oil helps weakening seals in trailer hubs. I carry it in my trailer toolbox and use it here and there. I have used the John Deere corn head grease in leaky gear boxes with success.

Where you at in S.MD and WV? I pass through there to take my daughter to Ohio U. pretty often.

I use NLGI 000 in my bush hog and my post hole digger gear boxes.

U can purchase on eBay for about $85 for 35 pounds.

It doesn't matter what grease you put in it, the grease will warm up and the bearings will get lubed just fine.

I have been putting the cheapest grease I can find, in one of my rotary cutters for more than 25 years, a half of a tube at a time, and the bearings are just fine.

The theory is grease is so thick, it can't make it out of the gaps in worn seals. Not that it reconditions those seals.

The thicker the lube, the more power it will rob & heat it can build. But as a practical matter loosing 1% of your power & a degree or 2 won't be a problem for an old tractor impliment.

I used some pourable grease (00 maybe). In an old flail mower. Mower cost me $100, new seals were going to be about the same. Dumped in the grease & it lasted for 5ish years until I retired it. Still keep it around as a spare if the new mower has issues.

I hear corn head grease made for corn headers works great as a pourable grease. Not clear if it's a John Deere thing or generic combine thing.
