I currently have a b7800 and looking at going a little bigger for bushhoging. I am looking at l3800 hst rated at 30.3 at pto, and putting a 5ft med duty bushhog on it. The dealer tells me it want handle that very well and would need to go standard duty and that i could go to l3940 and get 6ft med duty bushhog. i am lost cause it has 33 hp at pto, I know the l3940 is a lot more tractor and lot more $ too. was trying to stay close to 5ft range so my other attachments would work. Sorry for long post just dont understand.

What are you mowing? Sounds like you are mowing some pretty thick stuff.

Hope this works. I just joined. The L3800 will work great with a 5' bushhog. I have a L3700 which is the same tractor except the new sheet metal. I use a 5' hardee bushhog, 6' finish mower 6&7' box blade and a 20 blade disk.

I assume you've tried the 5' bush hog with your B7800? I have a 5' on my B2710, which is a few horsepower less than yours but otherwise the same tractor, and I've never encountered anything I couldn't go through. What are you mowing?

We just aquired a 70 ac farm. about 40 ac or more planted in beans being leased out, the rest in woods and maybe 15 ac or so brairs and and some sapplings in 1 to 2 in. range. Cant spell to good. I know I probably need bigger tractor but the farm is 12 miles from our house, and dont really have the means to haul bigger tractor. Not looking to clean up in short time just something to work with slowly and to keep it up after i get back in shape.

I have a B7800 and it won't do 2" saplings. Before my B7800 I had a MF135 diesel with 38 PTO HP. It was unstoppable with a 5' brush hog. You may want to consider hiring the brush hogging out the first time for the rough stuff. My B7800 handles a 5" brush hog on my ten acres of pasture. But these are finished fields that I mow 3-4 times a year. No saplings, brush, or heavy stuff.

You are probably right Whistlepig, but I still cant figure out why dealer said l3800 would not handle 5ft med duty with 30.3 hp at pto but l3940 would handle 6ft med duty with 33.0 at pto. Anyway thankyall for the replies.

For the rough stuff I think the Massey 135 with 38 PTO HP would grunt a bit with a six foot mower. I used a 5' cutter with it. I wouldn't beat up my new tractor for a one time deal on the rough stuff. I would pay someone and let them beat their tractor up. After the pastures are roughed out then you can cruise around your tractor. I think a L3400 would handle a 6' cutter nicely on finished pastures.

You right on that Whistlepig wouldnt want to put new tractor and bushhog in that.

I to would pay for that first bush hogging. I currently have a B2320 with a 4' med duty/weight bush hog and I have no trouble with it cutting 1" stuff.
Your B7800 is a big brother to my B2320.
Does have some issues with some of the bigger rocks but it's mostly noise.:D
