Bush Hogging with Yanmar\'s?

Hello all! I'm a lurker and have been a little apprehensive about posting a question here since I am not "tractor literate". I e-mailed Tom at "Fredrick's Equipment" and he was very nice and helpful but he left me with a couple of questions. Hopefully somebody can shed some light on this for me.
1. Only the "powershift" equipped Yanmar's can operate the PTO while the tractor is not moving?

I have access to an old Ford tractor that has the feature where the PTO only works when the tractor is moving. I would not care to purchase a tractor that works that way. I need to back in and out of tight spaces while the PTO functions.

The Yanmars do not have a live PTO or 2 stage clutch so when you press the clutch the PTO disengages. On the powershift tractors, you can shift to neutral without clutching. Therefore the PTO does not disengage.

The PTO will work anytime as long as it is engaged and the clutch isn't pressed in. In other words, even if the transmission is in neutral, PTO is engaged, and the clutch IS NOT pressed, the pto will spin unless there is a problem with the tractor.

With the PTO ENGAGED and the CLUTCH IS NOT PRESSED in, the shaft will spin, unless there is a problem with the tractor. When you press the clutch in, the PTO shaft stops turning.

I had a 1949 Ford 8N. I know what you are talking about.

BUT UNLIKE THE 8N, THE PTO DOES NOT HAVE TO BE ENGAGED FOR THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM (3-Point Hitch) TO WORK.

Even without live PTO when the tractor is running and in neutral the PTO should work/spin if engaged. I've been told that the only attachment one might have difficulty using without live PTO is a snowblower because it would get clogged.

As the others have said.. the 'clutch' is the key factor. I fthe pto is engaged, and the clutch is not depressed.. the pto will spin.. assuming the tractor works.. etc..

Get an over running coupler and add it to your pto stub.. that way you can make better use out of that single stage pto.

The ORC lets the mower override the pto, like when you hit the clutch, and want to shift.. etc.. the mower will not be able to backdrive the drivetrain.. etc.

is that the same as a PTO clutch(over run coupler)....my dealer included one on my ym2000 $75 (different name for the same thing???)had to cut the PTO shaft a couple of inches, works fine /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Some people call the ORC a pto clutch.. but I don't like to use that terminology.. as it seems to easty to confust with 'slip clutch'. Both would require cutting the shaft down if it is too long. The ORC freewheels in one direction.. the slip clutch is by definition, a torque limiting device.. and slips at a certain amount of rotational load.

My YM2000 came with a ORC at time of purchase, I have seen some other makes/models of ORC's with a spring push-pin to remove it from the shaft. Mine does not have this feature, there is simply a grease zerk and a hex nut, (removing the hex nut only reveals what looks like another place to put another grease zerk). How would this ORC come off should I need it off ( while raising my scraper blade on the 3 pt lift, it nearly gets hung up under the ORC).

When you remove the grease zerk you should see another hole. In that hole there should be a roll pin. You will have to knock that roll pin out to get the ORC to slide off. They are a pain to get off if they weren't greased good when they are put on. If you don't see a roll pin in there holding it on, I wouldn't use it. It just isn't safe!
