I have a bush hog 8ft shredder ( model 3008) that's got less then 50 hours on it, but has already developed a leak in one of the gear boxes ( there are three - the main and one on either side driving two blades ). It's a slow leak I believe, as the gear oil is almost full even a day or two after I have topped it off, but definitely in a period of a week or two most if not all of the oil has drained out of the gear box. I have had it in storage for more than a year, so the warranty is not good anymore, so I was going to see if anyone here can suggest what part may need to be replaced or fixed. Thanks in advance.

Top and bottom seal would be my guess.

Also check the bearing conditions at that time.. loose bearings will make seals fail.

Also check if it has a box vent.. if so.. make sure it is not plugged.. plugged vents make seals weep and leak and can blow them out.

Don't overfill the box either.

You might just want to check on that warranty. I do believe the GEARBOX is warranted for more than one year. (I'm thinking 5?) Bush Hog is good about honoring warranty issues. Let's hope your DEALER will step up to the plate and take it to Bush Hog.

If your leak is in the bottom, what I have done successfully on several older bush hog units is to drill a small hole in the casting going down to the lower bearing, tap it, and install a grease fitting in it. Grease it with JD cornhead grease each evening, and soon the leak stops. The grease, being thicker can't get through the seal, yet still keeps the bearing lubed.:D

forget dinking with a fitting...You can just pack the box with the 0 and 00# greases. That's a standard 'shadetree' fix for some gear boxes... still if the seals are available.. that's the real way to do it..
