Bush Hog RPM

Hello all, I have a 5740C and love it so far, I am using a new 8 foot twin blade Bush hog with slip clutch 100HP gear box. I was wondering what RPM you normally use on the 5740C to get good results, for me it seems to be around 2100 or so, if it is less even with the blades nice and sharp it seems to leave a thin row of grass uncut usuall around the time area and I have the industrial tires and they are set to the recomended pressure 26 rear, 33 front I believe.

The tyres crush the grass as you travel , the faster PTO speed is creating more suction from the blades which is helping to stand the grass back up to meet the blades . I use the 1000rpm position on my PTO instead of the 540 and decrease the engine revs accordingly . This permits 540PTO speed at the maximum torque band at lower engine revs which still gives 540 at the PTO and conserves fuel . This in effect brings your fuel bill down from $4 a gallon too less than $3 a gallon and creates less wear and tear and maintanance to boot .

Thanks Iron horse, That makes sense, I notice it seemed to cut better close to the ground creating more suction

I wish the 5740 had the dual range Pto that would be a big help

If your slasher is not fitted with suction lift blades allready , you maybe able to . They either have a slight twist or have a flight on their rear edge . You can also get mulching blades that have a serrated rear flight on them .
