Finally had to get a Rotary Mower. With all this rain and hot weather we've been having, my pastures were getting overgrown in some areas. The horses couldn't keep up with it! Went with a 5' Razorback for my 25 PTO HP tractor since all I'm mowing is tall grass. Handles it well. Never really boggs down at all. The only thing is I'm getting a strange load moan sound. Seems to be resonating from the stump jumper. It's oval in shape on this model. Becomes louder when your mowing over taller grass. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this? This is the first rotary mower I've used so can't compare to anything else.

I have a Bush Hog brand mower similar to yours. I'm not sure what mean about the moaning sound. It does make some different noises depending on what your cutting, but mine mostly makes a rhythmical swooshing sound.

The noise is tough to describe. It's more of a resonating sound coming from under the cutter as if a harmonic is created in the structure of the housing. Again, thinking it's created by the swirling of the stump jumper. Wondering if your stump jumper is oval or round in shape? It gets a bit irritating after a while. Wouldn't mind if it was just the sound of cutting.

Oval shaped stump jumper. My model is the SQ600.

I mow with a 5,6,8 and 10 foot RC's each has it's own song.
What we try to do to make sure each of our babes are singing and not groaning is by "sensing"! :licking: Checking the heat of the gear box and slip clutch etc. If the slip clutch is "moaning" ie. slipping then it will get hot and smell - like bad brakes.
I'm assuming you have a slip clutch? and who ever sold you the unit told you about how to perform field adjustments if needed.
Another thing is how much the cutter "vibrates" (its a lot of steel moving around at a pretty high speed) - if it seems "smooth" and you dont feel/smell any heat - pour it on! - whoops I looked at your post - no slip clutch - aw well pour it on anyway!

I have an older version of your RZ160, and the stump jumper is oval on mine. I've never noticed any odd sounds from it.

Thanks for the replies. After using the mower again yesterday I would descibe the sound as being similar to when you blow over the mouth of an empty jug only much louder. I checked tightness on all the nuts and bolts on the machine, adjusted the height of the mower, made sure it was level side to side, adjusted the angle front to back, checked for any unusal play with the stump jumper and blades. All tight. Didn't help.:(

Does it have lift blades? or does it have straight brush blades? I have a 6' bush hog squealer and when I went from the straight brush blades to the lift blades it sounded signifigantly different, I attributed it to the lift or vaccum and it has never given any problems, it's a rotary cutter that is designed to do rough cutting it's gonna make some noise.:D

It looks like it has the straight blades. They have a bend downward lengthwise from the bolt, but they don't have any curve across the blade or any lift bend opposite from the cutting edge.

Does it have the correct level of oil in the gear box? Like others said all bushhogs seem to have a unique sound to them.
