Bulldozers on Antartica

Since a few here share my dozer fetish, I thought I would share my treasure. These were posted on the antique caterpillar site awhile back and since it's snowing outside, what better time to share. This is one of 3 specially built D8s left on Antartica still working, the oldest being a 1957 model. The D8s feature stretched frames, 54 inch wide tracks and D9 engines. Very cool Scott! I can understand the wider tracks but why the stretched frame? Thanks for the pics /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just guessing but the wide long tracks probably reduce surface pressure of the machine and also enable it cross crevices or such.
