Has anyone bought ON road diesel in bulk?

I have a F350 that when I fill it up it takes 30-32 gallons in a 38 gallon
tank. Right now I fill up about twice a month. Once we move to the
property I'll have to fill up at least three times a month if not four. I'm
thinking that when the wifey needs a new car we would go for a diesel
burner so all our vehicles and the tractor would run on diesel. (Looks like
Volkswagen is the only current supplier of diesel burning cars. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif )

I looks like I would be burning at good 100 gallons per month just on
my truck and the tractor. If the wife's car is a diesel burner we would
really be going through some fuel.

Since I was planning on getting a small tank and pump so I could get
away from the two yellow fuel cans, I started to wonder about fuel
savings on buying in bulk.....

I would buy ON road fuel and just log what the tractor uses during the year.
At tax time I would take the right off on the tractor fuel usage.

From going through the archives it looks like I could save 25 cents a gallon?
Does that seem right. 25 cents would be a huge savings....

Thanks,
Dan McCarty

Do you mean that you could save 25 cents by buying in bulk or you could save 25 cents on the off-road portion of what you use?

Around here, I don't think you could save anything like 25 cents per gallon by buying in bulk, maybe a few cents, but possibly nothing. But you can save something like 46 cents per gallon on the off-road stuff.

I pay between $1.00 to $1.10 (depending on the season) for fuel at the local gas station. The guy who lumbered my property told me he gets it for $0.85 if he buys it in quantities of 150 gallons or more. This is farm deisel, but I imagine the savings would be simular with on road fuel.

Dan,
Yes you can buy either on or off road diesel in bulk. Shouldn't make any difference to your supplier. They carry both right there and just bring out what you need. The guy that does mine actually has three tanks on his truck. One for gasoline, one for on road and one for off road diesel.

cp1969,

In one of the previous discussions someone mentioned that the
difference in price for OFF road diesel bought at the pump vs what
was delivered to them at home was 25 cents.

I don't have a phone book for the area where my property is located
so I can't make any phone calls. The online yellow pages seem to
be pretty useless. There where two small companies doing fuel delivery
that I know about but they stopped the fuel side fo the business do
to added pollution control devices that would have cost them something
like 100,000 dollars.

Even if I save only 4 cents or even no cents I think its going to be worth
having my own tank just for convience...

Later...

Richard,

Thanks for the info.

Have you noticed a savings from the bulk purchases vs buying at the store?

Thanks,

Ed,

Thanks for the info.

If that rate held for my area that is a savingings of 15 to 25 cents
a gallon. If I'm burning 100 gallons a month, which is going to be
a low amount, that is 15-25 dollars I would save a month. Since
I'm going to get a tank and pump anyway its a pretty good savings.
Especially if the wife gets a diesel burning car...

In the days of layoffs all over the place 15 bucks is 15 bucks! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Thanks,
Dan

Not much difference at all anymore Dan. It used to be about 3-5 cents cheaper.

Dan -

I have two diesel VW's. I drive a Jetta about 100 miles/day, mostly highway and get a very consistent 52 mpg. My wife drives a Golf, mostly local and gets about 42 mpg. I can't figure out the price of diesel at the pump - sometimes it is less than gasoline and sometimes more. But it sure is nice to fill up at 650 miles and 12 gallons./w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif
