Friday I landed a gold mine on clean fill. A friend of mine told me about a contractor that had a lot of fill he was looking to put somewhere for free. I took (4) 15 yard loads on friday. Monday I'll be getting 8-10 more loads for future use. One load ended up in my farmer friends driveway. He had a low spot that was forever collecting water, not anymore. The other 3 loads went onto my access road. That 27 horsepower 2775 Cub Cadet earned its keep and did a wonderful job leveling off 60 yards of fill. My grader blade and toothed bucket sure made mince meat out of those piles. My road is once again secure. I will also be bringing in at least one load of 3/4" stone to secure this fill from washing out. I'm also working on installing another access road across from my house at the other end of our 36 acre woodlot. I'm waiting on the highway department boss to tell me what size pipe is required in the drainage ditch before I can go any further on this road. I think they are going to require a 24" pipe for that one. This access road will save me a lot of time when I need to do work at this end of the property. As it is now. I have to drive down the road, up into the woods and drive all the way back to in front of my house to clear any tree damage. There is one wet area that forms between the two access roads during the spring. This new road will save me from traversing that area during the wet times of the year. The rest of the fill will be used around the property where ever I feel a need for it in the future. I have a spot to store it for the time being. The contractor also told me he can deliver more clean fill anytime I need it for free.

My finished road. It now has 90 yards of clean fill. It is all graded and seeded. It also passed an inspection today by the C.C. He said I did a fine job on it. I also have permission to dump rock on it once it settles a bit.

JimR, I don't understand the grading and seeding part of the road project? Could you elaborate?

Gary,

This road is my only present access road to our 36 acre wood lot. The road is in wetlands territory and crosses a feeder brook for a drinking water reservoir. It has to be made so that it doesn't create silt and dirt runoff. I have the road slightly banked to the upstream side of the road. It is seeded with grass to hold the fill in place. The hay is put on to keep the dirt from washing out. Once the grass starts to grow. I can bring in a load of crushed stone to harden up the road. Almost all of the road is clay. The very top is a mixture of loam and dirt. The C.C. said to just keep an eye on it for washing out. I don't think I will have that problem. I do have a lot more hay to lay on it if it does start to wash out.

Out here in Missouri common practice is to just put in a culvert and dump rock of large to small sizes as you build up to the final surface.

That's why I couldn't figure out the dirt and grass part.

Jim - I lost track somewhere. What does "C.C." stand for? I know it is some kind of govt official but that abbreviation is not used in my part of the country.
