Has anyone had experience in building a small barge? Either redoing a pontoon boat or ?????

I'll bite. I re-built a pontoon boat. 'toons can be bought to build your own. Where are you going with this topic??

My tree farm has a 7 acrea lake, which is in need of some silt removal, the shore line is low and soft, so my thinking is to work off shore with a trash pump mounted on a barge, I would pump the spoils into a holding pond, and remove the silt after it dries out, So having no experience with pontoon/barges, I am looking for advice as to going about this

It's an interesting idea, but one I think you'll find required an enormous amount of effort with very minimal results. Do some searches on here and also go to Pond Boss Magazine Home Page! for "silt" and see what others have gone through to get rid of it.

The only real effective method I've heard of is to drain the pond and haul it out, or dig it out. Even then, it's misserable stuff to deal with.

Good luck,
Eddie

I was at a farm show a few years ago and a local outfit had a pump out barge they contracted out. It was a MASSIVE thing, powered by a HUGE diesel motor. I don't think your average trash pump would do much good.

This barge was maybe 30 ft long, and the suction pipe was maybe 18" diameter.

They had like twin 25 HP outboards to maneauver the beast around.

I'm sure it costs a LOT to have them work a pond, but to me it appeared to be a good alternative to draining or hiring a drag line, etc.

I am sending you a p.m.

The unit you described, really do the job, the large volume of spoil's in a short time they produce is a problem for me, I just run out of room.

7 ac. pond is pretty small.

pumping is the cheapest way to move material IF you have enough volume.

From what you describe, its doubtful that your project is large enough.

Check with someone about a dragline. Less grief & expense.

I did check into the dragline, The shore line is soft and alot of tree's would have to be cut in order to make room for the dragline to operate, your right thinking that's the machine of choice. They are not used up here as much as they were, been replaced by long armed excavater's
