Folks,

I'm looking to start building a run-in shed in a small set aside pasture area.

You may have seen my threads on adding fence and a "night pasture" area.

So I was making some drawings last night, planning my build and I have a couple questions. :confused2:

1) - How big? I've only got 2 horses today, but I will eventually have 4-5. I do not want stalls, I just want enough space they can escape the wind, rain, and such. So how big do I need, How tall? etc.

2) - Can I build it in the corner of the fenced area and use the walls effectively as part of the fence?

3) - Foundation? I'm thinking I will just use some of my 7' 1/2 round PT fence posts 3' deep as the "foundation" and attach the walls to the flat sides of them. Will that work? It is just wrong headed?

That is all for the moment.

Thanks in advance,
Be Well,
David

1. The size depends on the horses. My gelding likes to push the wife's mare around, so they don't do well in smaller places. I went 15'x25' (I think). It is 10' on the pasture side and 9' in the rear. I have seen others with 3 horses packed in a 15'x15' run in. If that was all I had the mare would be out in the rain.
2. The back of mine is along a straight run of fence. I have no walls, just the roof. So the fence is against the posts on the rear.
3. I used 4x4 posts, 3' in the ground.

Mine rarely go in it, even with heavy rain.

i have built 5 of these and they are all 12x12 with an overhang of 2' up front. i use 4x6 treated posts 3' underground. they are all seperated by fencing (at the ends of outdoor paddocks). i have considered building some of these in the pasture and would likely go at least 12x24 for 2 horses. but for you it all depends on how well your horses get along. her is the thread on my latest one: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/projects/221591-horse-shelter.html
