I saw an article in the local newspaper that said that if the Government could collect all the taxes that are due there wouldn't be any yearly budget deficit. It took a while for me to realize what an incredible statement that was. Now I can't find the article. Can that be true? Which one of you deadbeats ain't paying up? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I hope you're just kidding and don't actually belive this.

If the government had more money, they would spend more money. Just about every program has a proven track record of failure, but the standard rally cry is to spend more money on it.

I won't get political here, but please don't assume that if more people paid taxes, or those who pay a certain amount, should pay more.

The deficit won't go away until those spending the money show some responsibility for it and get rid of the PORK!!!

I'm talking about both parties here!!!!!!!

“Budget” That is a word that none of them know anything about. They seem to think that the taxpayers have bottomless pit pockets. If they want something else, all they have to do is raise taxes. My school district is just as bad. They just got their millage increase voted down for the second time in two years. Now, they say that they will try again in 2007.

Amen brother and when they don't have money they still spend it. I have worked for the federal government for 16 years and I am amazed at how they can send money. Every year we hear the same thing, "we aren't getting as much moneyin this years budget as we expected, so we need to tighten our belts". Hogwash, in September we ten hear, "we still have some money left for this fiscal year, go spend it or we won't get as much next year.

And make fun of the Army for $500 hammers, but NASA, Marshall Space Flight Center has a $44,000 conference room table and it does nothing special. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

This thread got a little political /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. I did a google search for Tax Cheats . I found a lot to think about. I am having a hard time getting a handle on numbers that big. I'm sure it would make people feel like dopes if they were paying and many others were not. I can't believe running such a large deficit is a good thing for the Country.

JerryG got it right. Budget is not a word they know the meaning of. You and I have a budget. We can only write a check as long as we have money in the bank to cover the check. It is illegal for us to write a check for more than we have in that account. I could never understand what gives the any Govt. the right to do what we cannot. I've been trying for years to figure out a way to write out a check and have the money come from someone elses account but there's a law against that too. Same thing goes for the state lotteries including scratch offs. Why can't I print up 10 million scratch offs a month at $5 each. I'll could gaurantee a million dollars in winning tickets every month. The rest would cover my expenses, overhead, etc. and probably have enough left to support the local schools better than the state is now. Didn't they call this racketteering years ago.

While I agree with everything Eddie said, I don't think collecting all of the legally owed taxes would put much of dent in the deficit.

[I could never understand what gives the any Govt. the right to do what we cannot.]

Way back in the Dark Ages when I took Economics 101, the instructor had a convoluted explanation why governments could safely run a deficit. I never understood; just memorized the words for the test, then forgot them. Since then, it seems conventional wisdom is that deficits lead to inflation and maybe deficits are not so safe.

Something I read a while back bothers me. The gist of it was that the failure of a democracy starts when people discover they can vote themselves money. Will the federal deficit do us in? No political intent here--just trying to understand.
