I have a 1/4 mile gravel driveway and was considering brushing on old motor oil or UTF to the snow plow to let the snow slide off more easily. Anyone ever try this? I just performed the first 50hr maintenance and have lots of motor oil, gear oil, and UTF. The plow is also brand new.

I dont know if there is a cure all for snow sticking to metal. I do remember that the blade needs to be as cold as the snow before you plow.

I've never found a solution. I've tried several "home remedies". None worked.

Extremely cold temps seems to work the best. Snow is cold. Plow is cold. Ground is frozen so no dirt scraped up.

For snowblowers people often recommend spray on oils.
Silicone is good for shedding water, some people swear by Fluid Film, or Pam cooking spray. These help, but are temporary.
As others say, temperature of metal vs. snow makes a big difference.
I’ve thought about Turtle Wax, good for shedding water, but have never tried it.

Thin sheet of puck board pop riveted on the face of the plow.

Don't know what puck board is?

I've tried WD40, car wax and Fluid Film. The WD40 disappears quickly, the car wax lasts quit a bit longer. Last year I tried aerosol Fluid Film and I think it lasts the longest but I'm old and I don't totally trust my memory.:) This year I got a gallon bucket of Fluid Film and brushed it on the plow and the snowblower about 3 weeks ago. It is supposed to bond with the metal and I have definitely given lots of time to do that. I will see how it performs this year. One thing that works well, is speed. If I get going fast enough the snow will eventually release from the blade and then will keep flowing off of it until I slow down too much.

If you find the ultimate solution, please let us know. In the mean time I wait for more snow so I can give the Fluid Film a go.

If my choices are dealing with the minor inconvenience of snow sticking to the plow vs contaminating lots of ground water I’ll choose scraping snow off when the weather is warm.

I've found, in my case, WD40 did not help. About the best - keep the plow clean, smooth with a fresh coat of paint. Keep the plow outside so it's as cold as the snow. Don't get your hopes up if dealing with wet, heavy snow. Plow when the temps are below freezing. I prefer to plow when it's 20F or colder.

I'm retired - so I have the benefit of being able to wait..........
