Brush cutter gear box.

I have been using 90wt gear oil in a Woods brush cutter gear box.

I have heard of filling the gear box with grease to offset bad seals.

I have been doing that for years. Never had a problem. Just put 50 or so squirts of grease in it then top off with 90wt. The grease will whip around and almost stop the leak.

I've over 500 hours on a Woods 72 inch brush cutter, with no oil leak. I kind of wondered whether the oil should be drained, with fresh 80-90wt replacement, so did it - no clue whether it's necessary. Anyhow, is your Woods leaking oil? If so, then try the grease remedy, but if not, why?

One reason I run the grease on older bushhogs is that incase you hit something, you will never know it's leaking on the outer gear boxes because they leak on the bottom. Even if you check the oil level first thing, an hour latter you could damage the seal and run the bearings dry. The grease will stick to the gears and bearing giving them protection while the 90w will just run out. Oh, grease being thicker will also seem to make less gearbox noise on older equipment. John Deere cornhead grease #0 is what I run with a splash of 90w to thin it out just a little.
