Snow Broken u joint on 59" blower drive shaft

I hit a baseball sized rock that stopped the impeller the drive shaft bolt broke. Part 18. That bolt connects the U Joint to the impeller (the hole on part 14). Mine did not have the woodruff key Part 20 installed so the bolt broke saving my U joint. A bolt is cheap compared to a U-Joint.

Maybe that is the answer, don't use the key and let the bolt shear. Using a proper shear bolt would be even better.

Yes......definitely will remove the woodruff key on the new assembly.

The dealer sent me the exact image to confirm we were looking at the same part today......and they couldn't sell just assembly #12 (what I need).

Does anybody sell these separate or is it the whole assembly as I'm running into?

Thank you

In my case the piece that broke was the fancy universal that the impeller attaches to. I tried to leave the key out and found the bolt sheared too easily. Would have been constantly replacing it and it is not that easy to get at.

Hiya,

Honestly, go to a local driveshaft repair shop, a PTO shaft is the same as a drive shaft. Universal joints are all standard sizes, they will have it and be able to repair your shaft. Ask them to make a sheer point on the shaft for the joint closest to the tractor.

Don't pay what Deere wants for the replacement shaft, the joint is maybe 15 bucks.

For example:
PTO
Chicago Driveline has extensive agricultural driveshaft and repair components for primary implement drives. These driveline products are available in both traditional North American PTO shaft configurations and European style telescoping tube-within-a-tube metric drivelines. The primary products available to this market segment are quick disconnect yokes, end yokes, safety shields, telescoping shafting and sleeves, clutches, wide angle constant velocity drives, and complete driveshafts.

My 2 cents,

I stopped by the Deere dealership Friday and picked up the 59" blower drive shaft assembly.....$391.00 with Tax. Realizing this is likely to break again, having a "backup" is the way to go. So instead of buying a 2nd unit, repairing the 1st looks possible.

I went on-line per your suggestion .....and it's all there:

Weasler Tractor Yoke Domestic 6 Series Spring-Lok, 1"- 15 Spline, 1050615 | PaulB

Weasler 6 Series Yoke + Shaft Assembly For 48" Driveline, 10000648 | PaulB (shaft will need to be cut down to about 15" to fit)

PTO Cross & Bearing Kit North American #6 Series: Extended Lube, 2010600 | PaulB

A little over a $100 for the parts.......and doesn't look like any welding (I'll follow up once assembled)

Thanks gents.

Valu-bilt - I think they just changed their name back to Country - has these type of parts listed in their catalog & web.

Most any farm supply store out in the country - with 'fleet' or 'farm' in their name, will have these parts on the shelf.

Any A&I dealer would be able to get them. And, I'll bet your JD dealer is and A&I vendor. But, he makes more profit charging you $400 for JD part, instead of selling you the needed piece for $100 from A&I......

I spoke with the dealer today.......had to order the entire shaft assembly per them (????). $350+. I was going to order two (as this is likely to happen again).......but by then, I'll have enough parts to rebuild!

I know this is an old post, but I just had the same thing happen to the PTO on my front mount 59" JD blower and the local Deere dealer told me the same thing. However, I took the u joint to my local NAPA dealer who took measurements and was able to hook me up with the right one. Just thought I'd share the part number in case others run into the same thing. It's UJ861 from SKF (pictures attached). $19. Worked perfectly.
