I started up my Boomer 2320 (3045) this morning after a couple hours tilling the day before... no tach. It was definitely working out in the field. I suppose it might have quit during the last passes after I rev'd up, and I didn't notice. Basically new tractor too. I'm just getting ready to do my 50 hour maintenance.

I assume there's a cable, ie it's not electronic? I took a quick glance under the hood but didn't see it. Would I pop off the instrument panel, or unscrew the two halves of cowling underneath (where the steering tilt lever is)?

The tachometer IS electric/electronic. If you look at the alternator, you will see a pink wire. That wire runs up to the instrument panel and provides a stream of pulses proportional to how fast the alternator is turning (and thus how fast the engine is running). My tachometer sticks from time-to-time and I have to thump on the face of the instrument panel to get it going. If your tractor is still in warranty, then I'd be asking for a new instrument panel or a fix under warranty. Condensation inside the instrument panel is usually the culprit.

EDIT: Are all other instruments working properly? If nothing is working, it could be a fuse.

Thanks Jim. Well, go figure, started it this morning, and the tachometer is working now. All the other instruments and lights were fine before, I checked all of that. It was just the tach. It was pretty bright out, but I think even the lights on the tach were working, just not the needle. After my first post, I found one of your threads on pulling the panel. I'm not sure what to do now. Wait and see I guess. Evidently, it's something intermitent. The tractor is under warranty for sure, but I have a transport issue to the dealer for service, about 10 miles.

call your dealer; explain, and he may let you remove the instrument panel and they can repair/replace it.
